One of the most important things you can do when you start fundraising online is to keep your family and friends up to date on your progress. The easiest way to do this is by writing an update on your fundraising website and then sending out an email. Let everyone know where to find your fundraising page by including a URL link to your fundraising page. Be sure NOT to include the updated info in the email, just include a link to your online fundraiser. Read more about writing this email.
The more updates you write during your fundraiser the better. It would be really hard to be seen to be writing too many updates; most people error on the side of not writing enough updates. An update could include new photos, a video, how you are doing on your cause, how the fundraising is coming along, or numerous other ideas I am sure I haven’t listed. Here is some good news, do yourself and everyone else a favor and keep it short. A paragraph or two would be fine. Remember people love pictures and videos!
A secret about fundraising online: most people do not donate the first time they come to your fundraising page. If you are patient and persistent, you’ll start seeing a lot of traction on your 5th or 6th update. Be sure to stay encouraged, sometimes it may seem like no one is coming to your page. Believe me, I see it everyday, keep writing those updates. Eventually you will see a steady flow of people and donations. Online fundraising can be easy, work smart – not hard.
Most peoples fundraisers last around 90 – 120 days. Try writing an update and sending an email to notify everyone about once every two weeks. Towards the end of your campaign, you might want to write an update more often. Try writing an update once a week for your last three weeks. Have fun with it, be silly, take a funny photo! Just be creative, you get no points for being boring. If you are ‘real’ and have fun, people will want to read your updates. You will not have to worry about people getting fed up with getting emails from you. Most of your friends and family are going to want to know what you are up to and how your progress is coming along. Go to our website and look at the people with $5000, $10,000 and $50,000+ you’ll notice one thing in common – guess what that is??? Yep, updates. Now check the ones that have a ‘goose egg’, notice anything?
