A few weeks ago, YouCaring had the pleasure of sitting down with Aubrie; a beautiful, young woman who has been crowdfunding on our site in order to raise money for medical costs related to her extremely complicated case of Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, and bartonella. Aubrie is more than just a woman battling a terrible series of illnesses, she is an inspiration for anyone who has ever felt anger, and wondered what to do with it.
A hauntingly beautiful image appears in my mind, as I hear Aubrie’s words,
“Sometimes I wish I could hold that little tick in my hands again. It’s almost unbelievable that something so small that I could crush with my fingers causes such havoc.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease in the US every year. That’s 1.5 times the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer, and six times the number of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS each year in the U.S.
What inspired us most about Aubrie and her story is the fact that she not only continues to battle her illnesses with grace and ferocity; she lets her emotions fuel her rather than stop her. She is on a mission to speak for those who don’t have a voice through her writing and poetry. Her first book of poems was published in 2015.
We asked Aubrie what she wants to share with others about crowdfunding to raise money for medical costs. Here are the top three things she shared with us, which we hope you will use to create the most compelling, authentic, and successful campaigns:
- Have a partner. Aubrie ‘s boyfriend Sam has been her greatest champion and supporter from the start.
- Reach out to your network. Initially, Aubrie admits that it was quite hard to be vulnerable and ask for help. It’s not easy seeing photos of yourself on the Internet, especially when you’re sick. And yet gaining the support from your network ultimately creates the momentum a campaign needs to be successful.
- Let your anger fuel you. One of the most difficult things about getting sick is dealing with the emotional rollercoaster: the sadness, anger, and blame. And despite incredibly difficult moments, Aubrie continues to choose action through the pain.
Whether you are battling an illness or know someone else who needs financial support for a medical cause, please check out our crowdfunding checklist and start your free fundraiser today. We’re deeply honored and inspired by Aubrie, who still needs your help, so we invite you to donate and share her campaign now.
