“YouCaring has an aura about definitely caring about the people who use the site and who have a humanitarian mission on it. YouCaring has this great sense of humanity and ‘down-to-earthiness’ about it. It’s really amazing that they don’t take a cut of the fundraising funds that were raised. Everything about it felt right, it felt like the right thing to do, it was very easy to use. It is definitely geared for people with a lot of medical issues.”
Aubrie has been battling a complicated case of Lyme disease since she was 19, for over a decade. Her particular case has required multiple treatments and surgeries. Aubrie needs to raise funds to pay medical bills from ongoing treatments for her tick-related illness and her basic living expenses. She is too sick and in too much pain to work. As her orthopedic surgeon told her, “You are the poster child for what’s wrong with America’s healthcare system.”
While Aubrie cannot finance her own medical and living expenses, she has found a solution with successful crowdfunding and a winning positive attitude. Aubrie and her partner use social media successfully with free online crowdfunding, using photos, videos, and frequent updates. By sharing her compelling story, Aubrie inspires others to donate to her own fundraiser.
“This has been a year of physical pain, emotional ardor, and genuine humility in the face of the generosity people have shown toward Aubrie.” -Aubrie’s partner, Sam
Aubrie needs to raise $90,000, and so far she has raised almost half of this amount to pay for ongoing follow-up exams, medications, prescription co-pays, and outstanding medical bills, plus rent, transportation, and other basic living expenses. To compound her financial difficulties, Medicaid wrongly billed her to pay expenses upfront, and Aubrie is unsure about getting reimbursed.
By sharing her achievements and setbacks while continuing to live her life the best she can, Aubrie benefits from online donations and offers hope to others experiencing hardship in their lives. Her high school, college and graduate school, poetry, and family and friend communities are all a part of her social network to tap into for her fundraising campaign.
Aubrie talks about her frustrations with getting and paying for proper and punctual medical treatment related to Lyme disease:
“So much of the early handling of the disease was a shameful mess. I don’t know if they’d ever come out and say, ‘We waited too long, we didn’t pay attention to this. We’ve underrated it and we’ve misdiagnosed it.’ It doesn’t make sense to me, having lived in a community that’s been decimated by it, that the funding wouldn’t be a huge part of the government agenda.”
We’re deeply inspired by Aubrie who still needs help, so we ask you to please donate and share her fundraiser campaign today. Spread the word. Ask others to give. You won’t regret it.
