To help increase your fundraiser success, we’ve broken down the most popular social media terms for the social media beginner looking to raise even more funds for their cause.
According to Techopedia, a social platform is a web-based technology that enables the development, deployment and management of social media solutions and services. For example, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. are all types of social platforms. Each site works differently than the other, but they all foster and manage their own content and communities.
A hashtag is a word, acronym, phrase, etc. that follows a pound sign (#). Once a hashtag is used on platforms such as Twitter or Instagram, it becomes searchable and from there you can find other similar content that uses that same hashtag. For example, #UnleashCompassion is a hashtag that YouCaring uses regularly on our social media posts.
A username or handle is used as your personal identification on social media. They can vary depending on the platform and help to set yourself apart from others and identify your accounts.
Tag or Mention
When you are mentioned or tagged, it means another user is speaking to you on the platform. For example, when you are mentioned on Twitter, a user will add the @ symbol to the front of your username to start a conversation or tag you in an existing one. You can also be ‘tagged’ in events and photos!
Twitter defines a Retweet as “a tweet that you forward to your followers is known as a Retweet. Often used to pass along news or other valuable discoveries on Twitter, Retweets always retain original attribution.” Twitter users often Retweet things that pertain to them or that their audience will find value in reading.
A bio is a short, unique description preceding your social media content and amount of followers on the platforms. When users visit your social media profiles, the bio is where they read more about who you are, where you are from what you like to post.
‘Liking’ a Tweet, Instagram, or Facebook indicates that you enjoy, appreciate, or care about that particular post in some way. Just recently, Facebook has introduced Reactions to broaden the range of emotions users can use to react to a post.
Reply or Comment
A reply or comment is a response to another social media post. You can reply to or comment on pictures, tweets, statuses, videos, etc. across all social media platforms.
A link is a URL that you can add into your social media posts to direct users to another website or web destination. You can easily add your YouCaring fundraiser link to any social media posts to direct your friends and family to donate. To shorten a link and to track who is clicking it, use free platforms like Bit.ly to gauge your fundraiser’s performance.
A share is similar to a Retweet but pertains to Facebook. You can share posts from other users or public pages so your friends can also see that same post. Sharing your YouCaring fundraiser on your Facebook page is a great way for others to see it and share it to their friend circle as well.
