The YouCaring team sends our deepest condolences and prayers to everyone affected by the tragic fire that erupted at the Ghost Ship artist collective workspace in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, on Friday, December 2.
This devastating event has claimed at least 36 lives and reminds us all that the unexpected happens daily, and that while we cannot control life’s circumstances, we can come together as a community and support one another through life’s darkest moments.
As a free crowdfunding platform, YouCaring exists in order to help alleviate financial burden amidst tragedy. It’s been incredibly inspiring for us to watch local Bay Area communities raise over $600,000 dollars, just hours after this horrific event. These funds will go directly to funeral, medical, and health related expenses for families of victims so they can focus on mourning and not worry about finances at this difficult time.
For those wanting to make a contribution, there are a few ways to get involved. The Oakland A’s, the Golden State Warriors, and the Oakland Raiders have generously offered to match donations up to $50,000 through a YouCaring fundraiser that has raised almost $300,000. Sutter Health, the official medical partner of the Oakland Athletics, has donated $75,000 to this fundraiser.
Music service, Shazam is sharing the fundraiser started by a local non-profit, the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts on it’s homepage as a way of supporting the musicians who lost their lives in the fire. We invite you to visit these fundraisers and donate and/or share within your community, wherever you are.
The success of these fundraisers is a testament to the love and support that stems from the Oakland community to The Bay Area, and the rest of the world. We are grateful to work for a platform that in some way is able to bring any relief during this difficult time, and again, our whole team sends love to everyone affected by the tragic event.
