We all have dreams. Susie and her son, Adam Klein shared a longtime dream of getting cast on Survivor, the television show, Adam tells me a few weeks ago. The 33rd season of Survivor premieres next week, and Adam is among its newest cast members. Adam brought his dream to life, not with his mother, but in honor of her.
A few months ago, Susie Klein passed away from lung cancer. When her husband of 35 years talks about Susie, he tells me, “She was my soulmate, and 35 years was not enough.” Together they created a beautiful family that prioritized health and wellness, which made Susie’s sudden lung cancer diagnosis much more shocking.
Adam started a YouCaring memorial fundraiser in honor of his mother. He wants to raise awareness and money for lung cancer research, which receives less funding than other cancers and takes millions of lives each year. “If we can help others, then somehow everything that’s happened will have some meaning,” he tells me, through tears. It’s obvious how much he loves and misses his mother.
Adam received the opportunity to go and shoot Survivor while his mother was going through cancer treatment, and he tells me that leaving the family at this time was the hardest thing he ever had to do. Adam knew he had to go, because his mother wanted this for him, more than anything. Through his fundraiser, Adam hopes to inspire everyone by showing how fully his mother lived her life.
Adam looked forward to watching the show together as a family, and now that his mother has passed, he plans to watch the show knowing she is always with him in spirit.
When I meet Adam and his father, Alan, a few weeks ago at their home in California, we watch home videos of Susie dancing – dancing in the kitchen, dancing in the streets, dancing at festivals. Dancing with strangers and dancing with family. Susie never stopped dancing. To learn more about Susie and to contribute to the campaign, please visit Adam Klein’s fundraiser here.
