“No one is too young; no one is too fit; no one is immune.” Maggie K, the Bald Ballerina breast cancer fundraising organizer and beneficiary, wants everyone to know that breast cancer can strike anyone at any age.
In the midst of rigorous work at Joffrey Ballet School, Maggie received a diagnosis of breast cancer at age 23. In her words:
In June 2014, my world was turned upside down when a doctor said these four words: “You have breast cancer.” I immediately burst into tears. Many questions exploded in my brain: Could I continue dancing? Could I return to NYC where I was a dancer with the Joffrey Concert Group? What kind of treatments would I be undergoing? Would I be able to dance after the treatments?
On this World Cancer Day, we’re stepping up to raise awareness of Maggie’s story and help meet her breast cancer fundraising goal.
Maggie’s medical costs are extremely expensive, even with her family’s health insurance plan. Their high-deductible plan means that she faces especially high costs early in the year. Since she started a YouCaring fundraiser to help cover treatment costs, more than $13,000 has been donated toward the goal of $25,000.
While she undergoes surgery and therapy with amazing courage and strength, Maggie continues sharing her story and raising money for cancer treatment. After having a double mastectomy, she shared this post on Facebook:
Breast cancer takes away two of the things society uses to describe femininity: breasts and hair. Women (and men for that matter) are far more than their physical appearance. This is one of the reasons I began the Bald Ballerina movement: to embrace who we are regardless of how we appear on the outside. I was never ashamed of losing my hair or my breasts. I knew that inside, I was still the person I had always been – that cancer would never take that away from me.
