The legacy of a young girl named Riley is inspiring great generosity! The Riley Sandler Memorial Foundation has surpassed its initial goal of raising $1 million and is still going strong. During a recent fundraising event in New York, the foundation celebrated their memorial fund success and presented a first look at their plans to honor Riley’s kindness, empathy, and love for life by helping children and communities.
Nine-year-old Riley Hannah Sandler lived life with happiness and extra sparkle. She brought joy to her family, friends and the world. She loved sleepovers with friends and taking care of others. In the words of a schoolmate, she was “always thoughtfully thoughtful.” Tragically, Riley passed away suddenly in August 2014.
The very next day, Riley’s parents established the online fundraiser The Riley Sandler Memorial Foundation, Inc., in order to carry forward her spirit and love of life. Donations poured in from over 2,000 families. To quote Riley’s dad, Ian Sandler:
“The response was just enormous. Especially in those first few days, it was just a wonderful counterweight to the devastation that we were going through. And that’s part of what’s been so amazing about the whole online experience and setting up YouCaring and having 2,000 families support us. It’s picking up Riley’s future and what her dreams were to have people know about her and to have an impact on all these people.”
The memorial fund continues to attract online donations and gather support through events such as its Winter Event and Riley’s Rides. We’re amazed by their achievements and honored to be the free online fundraising platform behind the Sandler family’s fundraiser.
Riley’s Memorial Fund Sets Record for YouCaring Crowdfunding Success
The Riley Sandler Memorial Foundation has raised the most donations for a YouCaring campaign — and it’s easy to see why. Her family’s dream for honoring the memory of Riley has touched the hearts and spirits of so many people. Here’s how Ian described his hope for making the world more like Riley saw it:
“I want people to know what a magical, kind, special girl she was. She loved everybody. Everyone was a potential friend. If people could carry that forward, that idea that anybody you meet really could be a friend, that’d be a really great way to remember my daughter.”
There’s more exciting news, too: The foundation has received 501(c)(3) non-profit status and is getting ready to initiate its community support program. In order to honor Riley as the truest of friends who loved helping people, the foundation will work to spread kindness, caring, compassion and empathy among children.
