The Story

Lily is a dog who our rescue, Black Dogs & Company Rescue, Inc. a 501c3 Public Charity pulled from a high kill shelter along with her 4 puppies in late August of 2014.  The little family had a very rough start when the puppies fell ill with Parvo upon arrival.  One of the 4 puppies, little Stewert did not make it despite the very best of round the clock care from our local Emergency Vet Hospital.  Sweet Lily was the best of mommas to all of her puppies and even took on a stow-a-way puppy that arrived with the family!  It took Lily a year to find a forever home, sadly Lily contracted heartworms and her adopter was not able to have her treated.  Our rescue always takes our dogs back, so Lily came back in February of 2015.  We immediately began the lengthily and costly process of having the heartworm disease treated.  She did great with the heartworm treatment and also lost some weight per/doctor's orders (as of November of 2016 Lily is Heartworm Negative!).  As Lily's weight came off and her mobility increased her foster mom noticed that she just wasn't moving as she should and seemed very tender on her hind end.  Upon examination it was revealed that she likely had a torn CCL.  X-rays revealed a new cruciate tear in one leg and an old one in the other.  Not the news we were hoping for.  Our Veterinarian repaired one knee in June of 2016 by placing an artificial band.  In November of 2016 when we hoped to talk about repairing the other knee we learned that the surgery did not hold and were referred to a specialist.  After an exam and looking over Lily's x-rays the surgeon explained that due to the formation of Lily's bones she would need TPLO surgery.  A TPLO or Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy surgery will alter the dynamics of the knee so that the torn ligament will be irrelevant to the stability of the knee.  Once both knees are repaired Lily will be pain free and will again be able to live a normal life.  The only catch, the surgery will cost $4,000 per knee, this price includes a rescue discount.  For a small, volunteer run, not for profit rescue this is an astronomical cost.  We have drug our feet for a month hemming and hawing about moving forward but the bottom line is Lily is in pain, she is given pain meds to manage and is on daily supplements but she can not climb stairs, she can not get into a car, when she runs around in joy when her foster family comes home she pays be having to lay on her bed for hours to recuperate.  This isn't the life we would like Lily to live.  Lily is a wonderful girl, great with the children in her foster home, a social butterfly with visitors, her tail NEVER stops wagging...she is joy.  Lily deserves to live a normal life, she deserves to be pain free and even if it breaks us we will find a way to get these surgeries done.  Please donate to our campaign!  Feel free to visit our websiteor Facebook page to learn more about our rescue and our mission.  Please share our fundraiser to help us reach our goal so we can help Lily!  Thank you for your support.

Lily's surgery was a success! Lily had bilateral TPLO surgery on Tuesday 2/7/2017 at Maryland Veterinary Surgical. We picked her up today. She is doing amazingly well.  She was so excited to see her foster mommas and little girl.  Lily will stay with our President for the next two weeks as she is retired and can be home with her during this difficult recovery.  Then in 2 weeks she will have the staples removed and will go back to our Secretary's home to finish out her recovery and Physical Therapy.  Total recovery is 16 weeks and will include aqua therapy which we are looking into.

The surgery cost $4,500 which was all inclusive, our only added cost was the harness that Lily came home in which was $100.  We will be getting prices for aqua therapy next week.  We were able to pay for the surgery but it has depleted our funds, until we have recouped our costs we are unable to take in additional rescues. Every donation made going forward will help us recoup what we put out so we can continue to rescue other dogs in need.

The bottom line is Lily is a sweetheart.  Her tail never stopped wagging despite all the pain she must have been in with not only 2 torn cruciates but also 2 torn meniscuses. Even if it wiped us out Lily is worth it!!

Yesterday we held a dog wash and raised another $200 towards Lily's surgery.  A big thank you to our friends at Best Friends of Harford County for rolling up their sleeves and helping and to the Abingdon Pet Value for allowing us to have a dog wash at their store. We are one week away from Lily's surgery and still have a way to go to reach our goal! Thank you for everyone's support.
