In October 2016, Billy called home to let his wife, Shannon, know he was doing great out elk hunting while in Montana. Shannon could hear he had a bad cough and cold. His speech sounded slurred and Shannon was concerned he had had a stroke. Billy assured her that it was just a cold and he would go to the doctor as soon as he returned home, to Anchorage. Upon returning to Anchorage, Billy went to the doctor, had x-rays, scans, an MRI and still no answers. They sought other doctors and the journey led them to Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, WA in February of 2017. On February 2, 2017 Billy and Shannon received the devastating diagnosis: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Terminal.
What now? How do you prepare for a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The average life expectancy is 3-5 years. The progression varies from person to person but progressive weakness of muscles and paralysis are universally experienced. Billy is strong spiritually, physically, and mentally. His faith in God and Jesus is unwavering and he is ready to take on these challenges and spend as much time as he can with his wife and his young son--7 year old Kirby. How do you prepare a 7 year old for this? How do you make lasting memories? Your donations can help Billy, Shannon, and Kirby prepare for the unknown medical expenses
, the known ones
(receiving care at Virginia Mason will require them to fly to Seattle every couple months--hospital bills, lodging in Seattle, therapy bills, future adaptations to their home), and/or hopefully adding to a vacation fund started by the Gallagher family so they can spend quality time together making memories with Kirby and having fun experiences to look forward to in the midst of all the difficult ones
. I am Billy's cousin and I am starting this page to provide some peace of mind and quality of life for Billy, Shannon and Kirby. After researching donating airline miles, Billy would still have to pay a fee for every thousand miles and it adds up to be almost the same cost as just buying a round trip ticket from Anchorage to Seattle. It saves Billy and Shannon the work of having to transfer miles and paying the fees by making outright donations so they can just purchase the tickets. I will modify and update this page as needs change and arise. Please remember no amount is too small--we can work together to provide. The wepay.com account is the preferred donation method (Just click "donate now") and is a secure way to make a donation via credit card. We chose to use YOUCARING because all the money goes directly to the family, unlike other popular crowdfunding pages where the sites are taking a percentage of the donations. Please help this family with your prayers and donations if you are able.
