The Travelin' Rat's rescue of the month for October is Best Friend Rodent Rescue of Everett, Washington.
Best Friend Rodent Rescue is an official 501 (C) (3) home & foster based Non-Profit Pet Rat Rescue & Shelter. Rats have taken over our hearts and our homes. Since May 2010 Best Friend Rodent Rescue has been rescuing ratties in need and finding them their new forever homes.
BFRR currently has over 90 rats in our care. Half of these rats are considered sanctuary rats and will live out their lives in comfort at the rescue due to the fact that they are not highly adoptable due to temperament or health issues.
We also welcome biting and aggressive rats with open arms. Typically, with this type of rat the first thing we will do is get it to the vet for a thorough physical exam to be sure that there is not an underlying health issue that might be causing the aggression. If there is not or if we think the aggression it might be due to an abundance of hormones, we will have the rat spayed and/or neutered with our local exotics vet. From there we work one on one with the rat. We have a very high success rate in turning biters around and several have been adopted and even become heart rats after proper socialization.
Most of the time we are the only option for pet rats in the Pacific Northwest that find themselves without a loving home. We also work with the local city shelters and are usually the first agency they call when they receive an under socialized or aggressive rat.
