> Come to the B&H Reopening Celebration, Friday, Aug 21. Guest of honor is Florence Bergson Goldberg, the daughter of the original owners!
We extended the campaign one last week, in a final effort to reach the much needed goal of $30,000.

East Village landmark B&H Dairy Restaurant, at 127 Second Avenue, has been closed since the massive March 26 explosion and fire, which destroyed half of their block of Second Avenue between 7th Street and St. Marks Place.
Neighboring restaurants reopened within weeks, but B&H has been forced to remain closed due to previously unforeseen upgrades needed on the 70+ year old restaurant, among them, a new exhaust venting (to the roof) and fire suppression system at a cost of nearly $30,000.
The restaurant is entering its fourth dark month while working tirelessly to schedule inspections and obtain approvals and permits from various city agencies. Owners Fawzy and Alexandra (Ola) Abdelwahed of B&H are now coordinating with a handful of great people at City Hall to get B&H reopened as soon as possible. Contractors began work on the ventilation and fire suppression upgrades on July 6th.
Fawzy and Ola not only want B&H to survive because it is their livelihood, but also because, as one of the few remaining Jewish Kosher Dairy restaurants remaining in Manhattan, they recognize the significance of B&H’s place in New York City history.
This is the second B&H crowd-funding campaign. Fawzy and Ola are deeply grateful for the $26,505 pledged back in April. The money raised allowed B&H to pay their fixed costs and employees for the first month they were closed. They hoped to be open a month after the fire.
How will my donation be used?
Four months later, B&H still needs your help to cover rent, utilities, those expensive upgrades and most importantly, months of unpaid wages for their loyal employees – all of whom have stuck with B&H throughout the closure. Funds raised here will help cover:
- A new exhaust system (which must be vented to the roofline)
- A new fire suppression system
- Gas line upgrade
- Three months of employee wages, rent, taxes, utilities
- Food to stock the restaurant kitchen
Why are you running another campaign?
Daily B&H hears from friends who missed the first crowd funding campaign and are eager help their beloved restaurant reopen.
Do the owners have insurance to cover the losses?
B&H has business interruption insurance, but have been denied compensation for their loss of business.
When will B&H re-open?
With your help Fawzy and Ola hope to be open again by August.
How can I stay informed about the progress at B&H?
