Hi Friends, family and community members!
I want to share something big happening in my life this summer. As you all know,
I am a lover of nature, adventure, music and bicycles. For the whole month of July - in
full expression of my passions - I will ride my bicycle 800+ miles along the coast of the
Pacific Northwest and sing folk songs along the way. I will also be raising funds to
donate to a great organization making positive changes in my Bay Area Community and
across California: the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN). APEN is a nonprofit
organization striving for clean and healthy environments and communities for all people.
APEN has also successfully fought for tougher safety regulations and won $90 million for
community benefits from the Chevron Refinery in Richmond.
I plan to start my adventure at the Port of Seattle, the launching spot of the Shell
oil company's Arctic Pioneer expedition. That's right, Shell has plans to drill and extract oil from
the Arctic, which will have devastating environmental impacts. The destination of my trip
is the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, CA. This refinery is responsible for toxic
pollution in the low-income communities of Richmond and surrounding Bay Area
communities as well as unsafe working conditions for employees.
I want a society that is not dependent on capitalism or polluting industries like
fossil fuels. I dream of a world where clean water is prioritized over oil extraction, where
ecosystems are expanded not degraded. I want my nephew to live in a world where
everyone has access to healthy food, safe neighborhoods and quality schools. I have
faith in each one of us to create a better world. I have faith in my preschool students, my
housemates, my friends, neighborhoods and faith in our collective liberation.
Thank you for joining me, thank you for dreaming with me, and thank you for helping me
make a donation to the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN). If you wish to
receive tax credit for your donation, donate directly to APEN @ http://apen4ej.org/get-
