The Story

EDIT SEPT 3: Given some things have settled down somewhat, and Nici recently got a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, I'm updating this fundraiser. We're still gonna need the oral surgeries but the car is more important. We can't really do much without it. I'm leaving the original information for now, but I've lowered the goal to $5000. With that, surely we can get a new car somehow.

Recently, my partner, Nici, and I moved back to Tulsa so she could look at getting on disability. Neither of us are particularly able to work, though I am building a writing career. Due to various financial issues, neither of us have been able to get certain medical issues taken care of and on top of that, my van is starting to fall apart from age.

We need help in order to get a new car and get our medical issues taken care of. We don't really have anyone to count on to help with these things. The most immediate need is the car. I've found a few good vans around town, with one in particular looking like the best option.

After that, we both need dental work. I need a second tooth extracted and a bridge to cover the spot. The first one came out in September and the gum is starting to erode. Nici needs her wisdom teeth out. She's also in severe need of a tonsillectomy.

We're hoping to reach $27,000 but if we get less, we'll make the best use of it we can. The tonsillectomy and the car are the most expensive aspects. We're trying our best to get our lives figured out and become self-sufficient but it's taking time. I'm the only one of us that can drive, as well, and until my van started dying, I was supposed to help out in our living situation by driving other people to work. Having the car also makes getting Nici to the doctor to work on a disability claim easier.

We are utterly appreciative of any and all help offered and if you're unable to donate, sharing helps too. It's difficult to be hopeful lately, but we're holding on. Thank you.

Well, I think I'm going to call this fundraiser done. We'll be moving soon and I'll need to use what you lovelies donated for rent. If you'd like to donate again, I can put up a paypal link but for now, I'll just say thank you so much. When I'm able to in the future, I'll definitely be paying this forward.

So, here's an update. As of last week, my battery is basically dead. Though, after what I'm about to share, it could be that the connectors are just that bad. I went and bought a new battery for the van. The directions for replacing a battery in a Windstar were easy. So easy. Too easy. Turns out, the positive connector is so beyond corroded that the bolt & the nut fused together and the nut has no angles to catch to turn. On top of that, every other nut and bolt in the thing were so rusted I had to fight them to get them going at all. The bolt on the clamp holding the battery down visible coughed dust once I got it turned. I'd have to replace all the connectors to actually put a new battery in there. It's just not worth it. The amount of rust in the whole thing is staggering too. I really need a replacement.

Suppose I should post an update here. First off, to everyone who's donated so far, thank you so much. At $620, I'm farther along than I thought I'd be. As for where things are sitting with the car situation, here's the details.

I took my van in to have it looked at recently and the official diagnosis is that it does indeed need transmission work. I took it to a transmission specialist and the guy told me that I had two choices. The first was have them work on it, where they’d take it apart, fix it up as best they could, and basically hope for the best. There's only so much they can do in house. That’s the cheap option. The second choice is they send my transmission out to be refabricated and it gets parts replaced and remachined back to factory specs. He also noted that I should do that if I want to keep the car for the next 3 to 5 years. On top of that, my battery contacts are extremely corroded and probably need to be replaced. So, along with all the other repairs and maintenance it needs, I’m looking at somewhere between $4-5000. And that’s provided they don’t get in there and find anything else majorly wrong. I know I've got some rust build ups in spots too and I have no idea if my windshield wiper issue would require a full replacement or not (they don't work properly, dangerous when raining heavy).

What does that mean for the fundraiser? I don’t know. I’m honestly leaning heavily towards something newer still. I’ve already had to put a new engine in this thing once already and we had no idea on the mileage of said engine. I’m not hopeful that sinking thousands of dollars into it will keep it going until I can afford an actual car payment. That said, either way, I still need to raise thousands of dollars for medical stuff as well, so I guess we’ll just see where I can get to.

As for the target car, I've been looking at a 2015 Ford Transit Connect that's under 30,000 miles and seems to be in great shape. All the homework I've done says the car is a great deal as is and the price has come down since I found it back in March. It's been with the dealer for almost a full year, and that seems like it would give me a bit of leverage in negotiating on price. I may talk to them and get some details. Maybe test drive it, make sure I can even fit comfortably.

Thank you again to everyone's who's donated. You are amazing.
