The Story

As many of you know, Anita Boyle had a serious accident last winter when the horse she was caring for spooked by the sound of a cracking branch during a icy spell. It was snowy and frigid cold outside when she brought the horse from the barn into the sunlight. The sound of the breaking branch frightened the horse and it swung its head and hit Anita. The impact of the animal's head against Anita's knocked her unconscious, broke facial bones and lost five teeth. It has been a long recovery for Anita.

Many months, five to be exact, staying home, sleeping, resting, healing a concussion, and having two facial-bone surgeries (7 plates and over 30 screws). Severe injuries made it difficult for Anita to eat. I'm happy to say, I've been privileged to eat ice cream with Anita--one of the only foods she could eat.  That and pureed soup, in solidarity, as well as chicken broth. Delicious! Even so, Anita is very thin now and needs a full mouth of properly functioning teeth to enjoy popcorn and steak again.

The teeth are the final medical procedure that will complete Anita's restoration and have her feeling like her old self. The teeth are also a hefty expense and not covered by insurance.  If we could raise this money for a crown, two dental implants, and a partial denture, it would be wonderful and helpful and a gift to all of us, since we will have Anita feeling whole again--smiling her beautiful smile.

Note: After seeing an oral surgeon, Anita has decided to go a different route. The above initial plan: crown, implants, and partial, included a metal piece that set against the roof of her mouth. This sounded uncomfortable and ultimately, Anita decided against it.  Anita is now seeing an oral surgeon who she’s decided to hire. He will fix her teeth, using implants. She will get the posts in by the end of July and then her new teeth in October. What an amazing, detailed, expensive, helpful, and pertinent process, and one that will be more comfortable and permanent for Anita. We will have to celebrate her with chewy delicious food.

Time to celebrate! We just hit $14,000!

To all you lovely friends out there who’ve been part of Anita’s Dental Surgery Fund Drive, we salute you! What amazingly generous hearts you have. A few minutes ago we received anonymously the remainder of the fund drive monies. We are so grateful!

Anita and I were talking this morning after a howling windy night. She said there was a huge cottonwood down on Noon Road and her power was out. My lights had blinked, but no damage here. Just lots of blow downs all around the park nearby. So we canceled our dog walk. No sense in walking through the park with limbs flying everywhere.

Anyway, as we talked we decided to take down the fund drive. She’d sold some art during Studio Tour and figured she could use that money for the remainder owed to the dentist. But, then we had a surprise that left us both speechless and seriously giddy. An anonymous donation that raised the numbers, meeting our goal. Thank you to our guardian angel who brought us to the top. May good luck shine down on you for the rest of your days.

Anita has a dental appointment next week, then at the beginning of November when she’ll get her new crowns. She’ll be eating turkey and dressing and cranberries and gravy and brussel sprouts this Thanksgiving. Let's raise a glass toasting her courage and fortitude...nearly a year long journey is coming to an end.

Warm Regards,

Nancy

Egress Studio will be participating in WAST this year, Whatcom Artist Studio Tour. Anita is working on a pricing today and finishing up arranging paintings and multi-media pieces. She’s excited to be open to the public and wishes her teeth were finished for the event, since she’ll be talking with everyone for the next two weekends. We don’t mind of course, because she is awesome and makes us happy no matter what. So be sure to head out to Noon Road and see her work, her studio, and of course, her lovely self.

The dentist, whom she likes very much, will begin work soon on the three crowns and the two teeth nestled between. Because of all your kindness, she has almost enough money to cover the final charge for these last couple of appointments. Can you believe it? It’s been nearly a year of Anita’s life.  Anita says she will also include earnings from the studio tour so she can pay in full…since she gets a nice discount for paying at the time of service. So buying art will have extra meaning this year.

Also, in my studio I’ll have two posters from which all proceeds will go to Anita's Dental Surgery Fund. So come and see me too! Then next week, we’ll know the remainder funds needed for Anita’s teeth. Once we reach this total, we will take down the fund drive and bow to all you fine folks who’ve contributed. Well done! What lovely big hearts you all have.  For now, enjoy these  sunny fall days. Cheers, Nancy canyon

Next week, on October third, Anita has her first appointment with the dentist who will make the crowns for the implant posts. The exam  will cost around $200—and then she’ll receive the final estimate for the rest of the work, which will happen in October or November. Anita has almost enough money now to pay most of the remainder of the dental costs from the donations from all you wonderful folks sent.  So amazing and wonderful.

Then, with Whatcom Artist Studio Tour sales, she’ll have the rest. So be sure to make it out to Noon Road and see what she’s been up to the first two weekends in October.     I wish I could make it out there during the tour, but I will be tending my own studio in Fairhaven. Anita has some amazing fiber creations she’s made with the threads of iris leaves. So creative, our dear friend.

Also,I have two posters ($15 each) The Healing Angel and Swirling Seas, that I’m donating the proceeds from to Anita’s new crowns. So come by for a visit at the Morgan Block Studios above Good Earth Pottery during the tour, as well.

Thank you all for your good hearts, so big and amazingly loving. We so appreciate you!!!!
