The Story

I am reaching out to you to share a critical piece of news. The picture below is of my 38 year-old first-born son, Drew Shiley and his wife Jessica. Drew was recently diagnosed with a tumor wrapped around his brain stem. For those of you who do not know what the brain stem does, in layman’s terms, it controls basic body functions like breathing, swallowing, heart rate, blood pressure, consciousness and whether one is awake or asleep. The brain stem also controls the flow of messages between the brain the rest of the body. In Drew’s case, the tumor has already affected his speech and caused severe headaches, epileptic seizures and moments of confusion. Thank God, the tumor is benign, but it is fast-growing and in a location where surgery is an absolute last resort. The hope is to shrink and then radiate the tumor to a point where Drew can live an active life again for as long as possible. The doctors are optimistic. As you can imagine, his medical costs are insurmountable for his mother and me. Drew has an insurance plan, but we have purchased over 20 medications in the last two months …. some have worked and some have not. The co-pays alone are in the thousands. Drew is not able to work full-time because of his symptoms and the side-effects of the medications. Not only does this affect his ability to support himself and his wife, but he is also responsible for supporting his three children. So, as a desperate parent, I am appealing to my friends and family for donations. No amount is too small.  I just cannot allow money to be a reason to stop Drew’s treatment. You are probably wondering why this is the first you are hearing of this. As you can imagine, both his mother and I are in shock and disbelief. Honestly, I hate to ask for help at any time, but when your child’s life is in danger, pride disappears.  Finally, PLEASE if you are not able to donate, send a prayer, as a prayer is priceless.

Its been hectic for Drew these last couple of weeks. He finish 6 weeks of radiation and chemo 2 weeks ago and the results were not what he or his family were expecting, even though the initial information was encouraging.

The tumor shrank a small amount, however it got wider in circumference.  This has prompted his medical team to start "proton radiation" treatment and an increase in oral chemo, which he just completed his first of 4 weeks of treatments.  Results of the first week are pending review of the MRI's.

Drew's medicine and visits to his treatments are averaging $700 weekly, which has depleted his finances and continuing his treatments are in jeopardy.  Any financial help would be greatly appreciated.

Please keep Drew and his family in your prayers.

Miraculously, we have some wonderful news to share! In a turn of events after a consult with Drew's team of doctors, it has been determined that the tumor has shrunk 2 centimeters in depth. Radiologists are saying this is one of the better results they've seen with this type of radiation and are very pleased. Several new chemo drugs will be introduced but  no more radiation at this time. Now , more than ever it's imperative that we raise the funds for these new drugs. Please, help  Drew get the treatment he needs to continue the positive momentum he is experiencing. His physicians now have confidence that he has the opportunity to look forward to at least a 5 year prognosis and G-d willing by that time achievements  in scientific advances in this area are possible. So please keep those prayers coming Drew's way as they are obviously being heard and know that our family is so grateful to you for helping get Drew this far. If we continue to work together with prayer and the means to get the new medications needed, who knows what extraordinary things could happen? Finally, our family is so humbled by the outpouring of well wishes and generosity received...there are simply no words. 💖

Drew is completing his 4th week of radiation, today.  He continues to have nausea and headaches, but he is trying to function as best he can.  The doctors have informed Drew that the effects of the tumor may have been manifesting itself for at least 5 years making it difficult to decipher what decisions the tumor had influenced past and present. He is being steadfast in his treatments and his bravery is beyond reproach.  His medication, daily treatments, and “special diet” expenses have wiped out all of their available cash.  If you can share his story with all your friends and anyone who might be able to help, we would be eternally in your debt.  Thank you all and God Bless you for your continued support
