The Story

Help a refugee family get settled in Austin! In a few days time, a refugee family from Eritrea - a mother and her two young daughters - will join our community in Austin, Texas.

We have volunteered through Refugee Services of Texas to provide social and material support to this family over a three month period. One of our first tasks is to furnish an apartment and stock a pantry for the family. Without private donations, the cost of furnishings and food comes out of the family's very limited resettlement allowance. We are seeking donations so that we can save the family money from their resettlement allowance and provide them with a comfortable space in which to acclimate to life in Texas. We hope to buy new beds, linens, kitchen equipment, basic furniture, and dry food.

In addition to funds for these new items, we are soliciting donations of furniture and furnishings. Several household items have already been generously donated by members of our group and the wider community. If you are in Austin and have an item that you think might be suitable to donate please contact us!

We would be very grateful for any donation you can spare to help our new neighbors start their life in Texas and we guarantee that 100% of what we receive will go to providing for this family's resettlement needs. Any money left over after furnishing the apartment will go into school supplies, gift certificates for groceries and clothing and paying future months of rent in advance. Refugee families are placed under significant financial and social pressure on their arrival in America, and your donation will help to alleviate some of that pressure. Thank you so much for your support!

Thank you to everyone for your generous donations of time, items, and money!  It really is heartwarming to see our community come together and provide such strong support.

The family has arrived safely in Austin, and they are ecstatic about their cozy, decorated apartment (a few photos are in the gallery of the fundraiser).  Because we received several large item donations, we were able to reserve a large portion of the money to help the family pay for their rent and bills as they get their feet on the ground.

Thanks again for everything!

Great news!  As of this morning, we found out that the family will still be arriving.  Thanks again for all of your support!

Thank you so much for everyone who has supported the family so far!  Your donations have been so generous and will put to good use.

Many people have asked what items would be of particular value - here is the current unfulfilled wish list in case you have any of these items lying about:
3 lamps
2-3 bedside tables
a desk and desk chair
bookshelf
bins for the kitchen and bathroom dustpan and broom
mop
digital alarm clock
coffee making stuff
new towels for 4
toys (bikes are always great)
educational items for girls aged 9 and 11
small kitchen table and four chairs
an adult bike and bike pump

We will likely be able to put any other items to use too.

Finally, you may be wondering if the family will still be arriving soon given the news today.  While we are pretty certain this particular family will be arriving still, we are unsure at this moment if their arrival will be delayed or not.  We will keep you updated.

All the love.
