God is good!
As many of you are aware, we began our adoption journey years ago in 2008. At the time, the international adoption process in China was straightforward and relatively speedy. Right around the time we started, the wheels came to an excruciating halt, with estimates in the decades.
We decided to switch to the Waiting Child Program in March of 2014. This program has children that are older and/or have special needs. Many of these children have very minor needs, while some have more pressing issues. During our meeting, we spoke to our agency about what we felt would be a best fit for our family. Our timing was perfect, and by the time we got home, we had already received Tommy's file in our email.
He turned 10 in March. He loves sports, helps with chores, and does well in school. He has a smile that will light up a room. He has been in the Child Welfare Institute system his whole life, having been dropped off at a local train station within a week of his birth. He was born with a cleft lip/palate, which has already been partially corrected with surgery.
Our financial circumstances have changed in the last few years. With Stephen changing professions and following his heart to become a teacher, the ability to set aside the amount of money we initially thought we could has drastically decreased. We’ve never been all that comfortable at asking for help, especially when it’s money. Who is? But bottom line, we want to give a young boy the opportunities that he would never have unless he’s with us. There is no getting around it. Adoption is expensive.Home study fees, agency fees, legal fees, immigration fees, Chinese government fees, orphanage fees, and post placement service fees. Lastly there are the travel fees, which we are asking for help with now.
At a certain point, we had resolved that the process would (literally) take forever. We are now at a point where it is all happening (NOW!). We have already paid a good portion of the totals, and anticipate more to be paid as we go along. Once we get him home the costs will continue, as there is a strong possibility he will need an additional cleft lip/palette surgery. He will also need speech therapy in addition to his English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.
We are working God's plan for us and are asking for assistance with our travel costs. We estimate them to be $8,000 for the two weeks we need to be in China for paperwork and processing. This includes our round trip airfare and the one way :-) ticket for our son. In addition it includes the 2 weeks of hotel, food, and intra country flights to get to his province and then on to the US Embassy in Guangzhou.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:19
