The Story

God is good!

As many of you are aware, we began our adoption journey years ago in 2008.  At the time, the international adoption process in China was straightforward and relatively speedy.  Right around the time we started, the wheels came to an excruciating halt, with estimates in the decades.

We decided to switch to the Waiting Child Program in March of 2014.  This program has children that are older and/or have special needs.  Many of these children have very minor needs, while some have more pressing issues.  During our meeting, we spoke to our agency about what we felt would be a best fit for our family.  Our timing was perfect, and by the time we got home, we had already received Tommy's file in our email.

He turned 10 in March.  He loves sports, helps with chores, and does well in school.  He has a smile that will light up a room.  He has been in the Child Welfare Institute system his whole life, having been dropped off at a local train station within a week of his birth.  He was born with a cleft lip/palate, which has already been partially corrected with surgery.

Our financial circumstances have changed in the last few years.  With Stephen changing professions and following his heart to become a teacher, the ability to set aside the amount of money we initially thought we could has drastically decreased.  We’ve never been all that comfortable at asking for help, especially when it’s money.  Who is?  But bottom line, we want to give a young boy the opportunities that he would never have unless he’s with us.  There is no getting around it.  Adoption is expensive.Home study fees, agency fees, legal fees, immigration fees, Chinese government fees, orphanage fees, and post placement service fees.  Lastly there are the travel fees, which we are asking for help with now.

At a certain point, we had resolved that the process would (literally) take forever.  We are now at a point where it is all happening (NOW!).  We have already paid a good portion of the totals, and anticipate more to be paid as we go along.  Once we get him home the costs will continue, as there is a strong possibility he will need an additional cleft lip/palette surgery.  He will also need speech therapy in addition to his English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.

We are working God's plan for us and are asking for assistance with our travel costs.  We estimate them to be $8,000 for the two weeks we need to be in China for paperwork and processing.  This includes our round trip airfare and the one way :-) ticket for our son.  In addition it includes the 2 weeks of hotel, food, and intra country flights to get to his province and then on to the US Embassy in Guangzhou.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”  - Philippians 4:19

We just got our update from China with a few more pics!  He is absolutely perfect. On our update request, we asked "What is his favorite subject?" His answer was "Sports."  :-)

Our travel dates are set and the countdown begins.

Yay!!! We have crossed the 50% mark towards out goal.  The site will be up for 13 more days, so please help us spread the word.  We sincerely appreciate everyone who has gotten involved and we can't wait to bring him home.  We just got Travel Approval (TA) and our Consulate Appointment (CA), so we are now even closer!

Just had a mini-meeting with our agency yesterday.  Without too much info on the intricacies of the process, we are getting more definitive dates.  The National Visa Center, US Consulate, and the Chinese Consulate are communicating, and we should have travel approval on or about September 5th!  That is when we can start booking and arranging the travel.

Complicating matters (nothing in the process is ever simple), they do not recommend travel in October due to the large trade fair that takes place in Guangzhou every year.  Hotels are booked and double in price, it's crowded, etc. We have to either go ASAP or wait until the first week of November. We will have to make our decision based on work, housing, and our school district situation.

Either way, this is exciting news because we will be one step closer to getting him home and settled into our new lives together.  As most new parents know, there is a nesting stage to go through.  With us, we are preparing as best we can and trying to make sure we minimize complications once he gets home.  We are extremely thankful for all the support you have given us and are glad we have you as part of his extended family.
