My name is Brittany McClure.
I am creating this fundraiser for myself because I need help to pay for college. For the past two years of my college career I have been struggling to pay for college because FASFA denies me financial aid. Why? My single mother makes too much money. In reality, she doesn’t make enough when you factor in all the bills and debt she pays. She is in debt because of the student loans she was forced to take out at the age of 18 to support herself and I while she worked full time and went to school at night. She was also a victim of a man who left her with all his debt because she had co-signed for all of his payments. I can proudly say my single, teenage mother got her college degree and is a sales rep for Toshiba. She works hard therefore I am working just as hard!
I graduated high school a year early with college credits and a 3.9 GPA. Now a sophomore in college I am maintaining a 3.7 GPA while working full time as well. I am 20 years old and finally able to afford the down payment of a car with the help of my mother. I am now paying that car off by myself because again my mother can’t afford it. At one point I was working three part time jobs to afford books, school supplies, car payment, medical bills, and daily personal expenses.
I am $15,000 in student loan debt and it continues to add up. I even have Bright Futures (a four year Florida only scholarship given to high schoolers with exemplray grades) but the money from that is slowly dwindling away. Scholarships usually deny me financial aid because they believe if FASFA says I am not in any financial need then I do not need free money from anywhere. I take out student loans because my mother nor can I afford to pay for tuition out of pocket yet I still want to get a higher education even if it means I will be paying loans until I’m 70. I also do not want to use debt as an excuse as to why I am not going to college and getting a degree. I want to better my future even if the government is not willing to help me.
I am one of the many students stuck in the financial limbo and I am asking for help from the public. I want an education that does not have strings attached to it. Lately I feel like the government wants the future generations to be in debt rather than have a higher education.
I have posted my loan statements from the past two years and the UCF 2012-2013 tuition cost. I am finishing 2013 Spring semester at FAU in Boca Raton, Florida and wish to continue my last two years at UCF in Orlando, Florida.
