I was just some random guy on the Internet to him, but he took the time to check with a diplomat friend and provide me an answer the very next day. I never ended up joining the foreign service, but having that dream was important to me at the time and his forum posts helped keep me motivated and excited. I hope his children grow up to be wonderful, happy people and his widow can find happiness despite his absence. Cheers to a great human being!

I started playing EVE about the same time I wrote the United States government asking them NOT to go to war in Libya about a year and a half ago. Our President did NOT listen. After reducing much of Libya to a pile of rubble, it would only make sense to keep a high level of security. Unfortunately, this was NOT done by the U.S. State department. It's ashame that the truth about what had happend was NOT released for political reasons. I knew news of a YouTube video was NOT a true account of what had happend. But one thing is certain. Sean Smith (aka: Vile Rat) was a well respected player in EVE and sacrificed his life serving his home country. People across the world who played the game know that, and Sean brought people who played the game together from all nations. My sincere condolences go out to his family. I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers for some time. God bless!

Sean was a diplomat in real life, and also acted as a diplomat for some of the "less gentle" participants in this online game many of us know as "Eve Online". you get the feeling it was his calling to try to bring tough situations to a point of mutual understanding between groups that could not find common ground without some help. it seems that this occupation, this calling if you will carries risk. considering how intelligent this man was, he understood this risk and knew the job was worth doing. i can respect that choice.

Back in the day, I used to fly in the same internet spaceship squadron as Sean. I hadn't talked to him in probably 5 years, but we used to chat on the forums quite a bit, and the memories I have of him are fond ones. He was an awesome guy, and I'm proud to have known him. As a native San Diegan myself, though, I'm sad I never got to meet him in person. His passing has motivated me to leave the defense industry ASAP (I work for the company that makes the Predator) and do something more positive and constructive with my life. Maybe solar panels? I don't know what yet, I just don't want to contribute to death anymore. :( I can't imagine what you guys, as his family, are going through, but I wish you the best.

I wish that the tolerance for religious hate would run out and that people realize the hatred stemming from religious criticism, is really a recognition within themselves of a flawed choice to believe in a logically flawed religion. I know there have been news reports of "radical groups" within this religion having taken it "upon themselves" to carry out these attacks, but I feel that it is something that is supported by the majority in these areas.

I'm a laughably poor former Eve player but one thing Eve has taught me is that a person's worth in Eve as well as in real life is not defined by how much money they have, instead it is defined by how many lives they touched. Sean was a great guy, and was always there if you needed something. I'm going to miss him horribly and can only hope this small token will help his family like Sean helped the many people who's lives he touched.

Sean was a cool guy. I am sad I didn't know him outside SA. But as a fellow federal employee who hop-scotches around the globe, I know the type of good he did for the world. I didn't know Sean all that well but when I did listen or play Eve online with him he was a great guy and always brought smiles and laughs to long hours of combat and was a great guy to play with. I am sad that I didn't get to know him as well as others did but he has touched the lives of hundreds of people. I am thankful for what little time I got to spend with him.

Dear Heather, Sean was a friend of mine in High School. I met Sean through a club called DECA, and we were unlikely friends. I was a cheerleader, he was a nerd. I went to parties, he played computer games. I liked rap music, he loved Nine Inch Nails. In spite of our differences, I still befriended him and I’m so glad I got to know this kid that was so loyal, hilarious, and a pure genius and I’m sorry we lost touch when I got to college. Of course, hearing of his death was a complete shock, and he died a hero, something that those of us who knew him back then always knew he would be. I am so sorry for your loss and for the unimaginable pain you and your family must be in, including his mom. I never forgot about Sean, he was an amazing person even back then and I'm glad to have called him a friend duirng those most akward, yet most impressionable years. Fly high Sean, you are surely missed.
