On October 11, around 7:00pm, Michael Dutra, 58, was riding his bicycle on Wood Street, heading home from the store with groceries for a family dinner, when he was struck and killed by a currently unknown driver who immediately left the scene. Skid marks left at the location suggest the driver of this vehicle was aware of striking someone, but instead of stopping to do the right thing, they chose to drive away.
Debris left at the scene along with a crime lab analysis of a paint chip left on the frame of the bicycle has narrowed the search to a 2005-2007 BLACK JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. The vehicle involved in the crash likely has (or had) a missing or broken right front marker lens, shattered right headlight lens and right front bumper damage.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Middleboro Police Detectives Division at 508-923-4636 or the Mass State Police in Middleborough at 508-947-2222.
Mr. Dutra’s daughters, Michelle (27) and Shannon (23) are devastated by their father’s death and are pleading for a sense of closure. As they grieve the loss of their father, they simply request only what they have been taught by him while they were growing up: “Do the right thing.”
To help encourage families, friends, and neighbors to look around for damaged vehicles matching the descriptions from the State Police, we suggested to the Dutra family the idea of asking for donations to put toward a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the guilty person(s) and they have agreed to give it a try. Middleboro Helping Middleboro Facebook Group is offering a reward of $3,000 for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons involved with the October 11, 2013 hit and run incident involving Michael Dutra.
All information, leads and tips should be reported to the Massachusetts State Police. The Massachusetts State Police and/or the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office will identify the specific information that led to the successful prosecution of the person or person involved. If after ninety (90) days, the person or persons responsible have not been identified, any funds that have been collected will be donated to the American Liver Foundation in Michael’s name.
Even by sacrificing tomorrows’ purchase of a cup of coffee and putting that money toward the reward instead, the act will speak loudly in numbers! Please help find justice for Michael’s unnecessary death and closure for Shannon and Michelle.
