STORY:

On October 11, around 7:00pm, Michael Dutra, 58, was riding his bicycle on Wood Street, heading home from the store with groceries for a family dinner, when he was struck and killed by a currently unknown driver who immediately left the scene.  Skid marks left at the location suggest the driver of this vehicle was aware of striking someone, but instead of stopping to do the right thing, they chose to drive away.

Debris left at the scene along with a crime lab analysis of a paint chip left on the frame of the bicycle has narrowed the search to a 2005-2007 BLACK JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. The vehicle involved in the crash likely has (or had) a missing or broken right front marker lens, shattered right headlight lens and right front bumper damage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Middleboro Police Detectives Division at 508-923-4636 or the Mass State Police in Middleborough at 508-947-2222.

Mr. Dutra’s daughters, Michelle (27) and Shannon (23) are devastated by their father’s death and are pleading for a sense of closure.  As they grieve the loss of their father, they simply request only what they have been taught by him while they were growing up: “Do the right thing.”

To help encourage families, friends, and neighbors to look around for damaged vehicles matching the descriptions from the State Police, we suggested to the Dutra family the idea of asking for donations to put toward a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the guilty person(s) and they have agreed to give it a try. Middleboro Helping Middleboro Facebook Group is offering a reward of $3,000 for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons involved with the October 11, 2013 hit and run incident involving Michael Dutra.

All information, leads and tips should be reported to the Massachusetts State Police. The Massachusetts State Police and/or the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office will identify the specific information that led to the successful prosecution of the person or person involved. If after ninety (90) days, the person or persons responsible have not been identified, any funds that have been collected will be donated to the American Liver Foundation in Michael’s name.

Even by sacrificing tomorrows’ purchase of a cup of coffee and putting that money toward the reward instead, the act will speak loudly in numbers!  Please help find justice for Michael’s unnecessary death and closure for Shannon and Michelle.

At the advice of the D.A. and a local attorney, the terms of the reward are set and approved. If after ninety (90) days, the person or persons responsible have not been identified, the reward funds that have been collected will be donated to the American Liver Foundation in Michael’s name, per the desire of the Dutra Family.

As such, flyers, pamplets, signs, etc are now being distributed and anyone and everyone is asked and encouraged to help.  There are 3 flyers that have been created which you can download and print at the links below.  If you choose to help, we ask that you inquire with any and all business/property owners before hanging them on doors, windows, etc.  We need to be respectiful of individual owners rights and policies.  Some business owners may have a 'black and white' policy when it comes to 'post no bills'.  Please respect that.

Consider areas of frequent visit and high traffic for posting, especially where there is a captive audience.  Ideas include: gas pumps, drive thru speaker/microphones, coffee/donut shops, ATMs, bars, restaurants, hair salons, libraries, schools, post offices, banks, grocery stores, universities, schools, RMVs, and so on.

Thank you for your time and consideration into helping get this information out there!

Just a quick update today:  Because of the great response and level of donations, it was suggested by the State Police to have a lawyer create and review some legal documention for the reward to protect everyone involved.  Thank you all for getting it to the level it is today!

Once that is finalized, we will continue to distribute flyers and bulletins throughout the area to continue to spread the word and expand the search!

Thank you all so very much!

So everyone behind this effort is beyond belief that the original goal of raising $1500 was reached in under 24 hours even before our goal of getting the site out to the local media became a reality!

After some discussion, we decided to aim for a new goal of $2500 but wanted to be up front and honest with everyone to say our original goal was met and we are aiming higher!!

Thank you all so very VERY much!

What an amazing and unbelievable response in the first 12 hours alone.  To wake up to see an entirely new column of digits added to the total donated: simply amazing.

Thank you so very much for taking the time out and giving so generously to this cause!  Every donation truly does have a voice, and do realize, even if less than half of the people who are members of the Middleboro Helping Middleboro Facebook page donated $1.00, that's over $1,000 toward the reward alone! No donation is too small!
The simple fact that there haven been so many donations coming in at over $5.00 (even a $500 donation from "JC" - WOW!!) as well as Anonymously, is speaking volumes as to how strongly the people of Middleboro and the general public feel about this cause.

We simply cannot thank you enough!!
