Sometimes you meet people who come into your life and don't really make a mark. Then there are people who command attention by just standing still. That is my friend Jennifer. She is this tiny woman with the force of the incredible hulk. Jennifer has run marathons, proposed to her beloved Pedro via a television show while he was stationed in Iraq, and kicked my rear during a bootcamp we did with some fellow moms (& forever friends). Pedro fought for our country in Iraq along side thousands of other soldiers in the US ARMY. He and Jen have two beautiful children, Pj (7) and Alyssa (3). These kids have smiles that light up the room just like their mother. Hurricane Sandy came along and temporarily took those smiles away. Everything Jennifer and Pedro worked to achieve was washed away. It very nearly took Pedro with it. But he {along with a friend who had gone to help secure the house} fought to get back to his family. Please donate what ever you can to help this family get back on their feet. Anything and everything helps. This family means the world to me and a lot of people. Help them create some new memories.
Thank You.

2/13/13:
We are as settled as we can be in a temporary apartment.  Trying to get through each day hoping for more news on our financial fate.  We are hopefully that there can be better days ahead, although every day is a challenge.  Thanks to each of you for your love and support.  Without all of you, we'd be lost.  You are in our thoughts today and always.

As of last night Jen ,Peter and the kids have found a place to live. I was with them to start there new beginning last night as we moved all of the things people have been so generously donating to them and the few things they were able to salvage out of there home as Jen said last night "Wow it's easy to move when your biggest piece of furniture is an air mattress in a box" and then laughed. It is a very nice 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath with a basement and garage a deck and backyard for the kids and phoebe to play in. As Peter put it last night in his own words "It's no Kissam ave but its  just fine for now" . It might not be the  "home" they have had for the last 6 years but it is "HOME" for now because they are all together. Thank you to everyone who has donated anything you could to them they are very humbled by everyone's generosity and thoughtfulness. And I want to personally thank everyone for everything that they have done to make sure they all have a roof over there heads (Melissa and Timmy for opening there home)  and all the things they are going to need to begin there new journey together!

An Update from Jen & Peter:

We are overwhelmed by the amazing generosity and love from our friends, family and even though we have never met. Thank you is not a strong enough statement. We could not make it through this without each one of you. We are currently looking for housing and will hopefully have an apartment for at least a month. This will give us time to figure out where we go from here. I honestly have no idea what tomorrow brings, but I know we are not alone. My house was ripped off the foundation and I may not have an address today, but I know it will get better every day. As much as I want to break down and give up, I know each of you is invested in our future now. For that and my babies, I will go on.

As of this morning, (11/2/12), Jen and Pedro have been able to salvage a few memories from the debris. Jen's racing medals, a few pictures, and some irrelacable memories were thankfully found and survived the water. Coming up they are looking for temporary housing and are very grateful for the out pouring of help. Every donation of money, clothes, and basic household items is appreciated. Thank you.

About a week ago I was watching the NBC Nightly News and saw the story about how Hurricane Sandy had devastated the lives of Pedro, Jennifer, PJ, and Alyssa. I had been watching the news for several days and had seen how so many people were so adversely effected by the storm, but for some reason Pedro and Jennifer's story really touched me. Maybe it was the fact that they seemed like such good people and such a loving couple. Maybe is was the fact that Pedro had defended my freedom and had been a first responder during 911 helping so many people during such a horrible crisis. Maybe it was the strength both Jennifer and Pedro portrayed through the TV as they verbalized their determination to move forward even though their home and all of their possessions had been destroyed. I admire people like Jen and Pedro and for that reason I decided to try to help them in what little way I can by donating some money towards their effort to rebuild there lives. I am sending positive energy and prayers their way. Stay strong!! Michelle Simon

Jennifer and Peter, having seen your story on NBC Nightly News, I searched to find how I could reach you to help. Sure enough, one of your deerest friends already set up this site. After living in NJ for 28 years near Belmar, I moved to NC this summer. I am heartbroken by the devastation at the shore. Peter we thank you for your service during 9/11 and also in Iraq. Jennifer, being a fellow marathoner, you know that the marathon is a metaphor for life's ups and downs but we eventually through perseverance and enduring strength get to the finish only to line up at the next starting line stronger than ever. You all will line up stronger than ever! My best wishes to both of you and your children. You will be in our prayers and God's hands.

I don't have much to give, but I had to give something which is better than nothing at all. I wanted to donate to something from the storm but didn't know what. I would rather doante something to you because I knew you rather than not knowing where my money went at all. My prayers are with you and your family. If there is something else I could do, please let me know. Maybe at my college I could try to fundraise for you and your family.....I will see what I can do.

Dear Correa family, I saw you on Dateline, and I also got the word through the grapevine at the NYSC - Croton. I'm so sorry for the loss of your home and your neighborhood. We all feel your sadness and pain, and can not imagine what it's like being in your shoes at this time. There will be a return to normalcy for you, one day. Until then, what you have is your sprit and determination to move foreward, and most important, your sweet family and lots of love to pull you through. You and your Staten Island neighbors are not forgotten!

Hi I my name is Adam. I saw this peace on the evening news.. I have a friend his name is Matthew Thomas Rammelkamp he can write off your mortgage.. I do not have much money but I have a 4 bedroom farm house w/ 60 acres of organic land, You and your family are welcome to share this w/ me if you need a place to stay. It is safe, on top of a hill (1, 450 ' ASL) and a great place to raise kids. I have shared my home & farm before. I am Blackfoot Indian and this is what we do. Please write to Omkastoe@frontier.com, I am sorry for what you and your precious family have been through!

Jean SmilingCoyote
I'm unemployed (long-term) and since I have no income even for paying to keep the roof over my own head next month, and no for-sure job prospects, can't donate anything to help them rebuild, which I see will be in a safer place uphill. However, people can go on my website at http://EFTornadoSafeHome.com and learn about what's needed for safe construction in that area. I recommend walls of Insulating Concrete Forms there. That's free. I have more references to experts on my website, including to FEMA 320. I have many preliminary floor plans for good, modest homes, but since I'm in danger of losing my own home, I'd have to be paid to work with an architect. But I'm cheap. I'm also on LinkedIn.com.

I'm just so glad to see that you were able to meet the original goal of $20K. And it makes sense that once the first goal is met to try and up it since we have 110 days left. And if the $30K is met, I say up the goal amount again! No harm in that! :) I am continuing to spread the word. I have had several of my friends either directly contribute here and/or purchase items from the Target registry. I will continue to do so until all goals are met! Hope you all are doing well and staying positive Jen!

Juanita, I'm not sure if you got a reply, but as I understand it, with a dozen other friends going through this. Another friend who lived on the docs and whose home was moved off of his foundation. From what he told me, Insurance is covering things like boilers and water heaters. Really. The more extensive damage is either not covered or barely covered by insurance. People also think FEMA is actually going to help rebuild a home. Unless a home is worth 30k, that's not going to be possible. There's a cap. I doubt that 30k is enough to rebuild for most folks affected and for Jen and Pedro it is no were near helpful. There home was thrown 500 feet from its foundation my other friends home was moved about 40 feet. We're talking major, major destruction therefore they will need hundreds of thousands to repair. I know the family and have been to the home. It's a devastating loss. The government will offer low interest loans but, we're talking about working folks that already have mortgages in these disaster areas and the cost of living alone doesn't leave much wiggle room for additional expenses. Keep in mind that they will still have to pay a mortgage, rent for a temporary apartment and other expenses like daycare, car loans etc. Thank you for donating to Jen and Pedro, god bless you for your kindness. I hope my answer helped you.

tim florio
if it was 100000 it still wouldnt be enough.

Melissa Benitez
Casey you are so right and I agree with all of your statements! What people fail to understand is that when a house disappears the mortgage doesn't cease to exist. Regardless of the houses being obliterated you are still financially obligated to pay for it. Homeowners insurance cannot cover the expenses of damages of this type of magnitude. How insurance works is you get to collect on the policy NOT THE complete value of the house. So people really think you can rebuild a house, furnish it while maintaining living expenses with an insurance policy of $150,000-$250,000 in New York??? In this state that buys you one wall and maybe a partial floor. From what I heard FEMA is planning on offering these families trailers to live in. So don't think FEMA and Redcross is going to shell out hundred thousand dollars to these families. The most they can help you with is 3 months rent. But like most things in life..it's a process. Paperwork need to be filled out and sometimes it takes weeks or months before you see a check. People need to be housed immediately, not 6 months later. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/11/08/volunteers-step-in-for-fema-in-storm-ravaged-nyc-borough/

Melissa Benitez
P.S. I'm not sure if the comment from Juanita was of genuine curiosity or it was questioning the integrity of the organizer of this page (which was not Jen or Pete)? There are other fundraising pages with the same cause that have a higher target that was not met with any opposition. For instance: http://www.youcaring.com/fundraiser_details?fundraiser_id=12766&url=taraandjimlewishurricanesandysupport

Juanita - I appreciate your generosity. My great friends started and maintain this site. I am extremely grateful for the help we have received. Every dollar will aid in the rebuilding of our lives. If you feel that your donation was not worthwhile, I am happy to give you back the money. If you give us this donation, you can consider it an investment in my family's future. That house was our home. We put every dollar we own into that house. We expected to live there forever and pass it on to our children. Now it is all gone, literally. Let me know, I am happy to do as you choose. Thanks again and God bless. xox Jen Correa

i would like to help this couple. Please contact me directly.

Melissa
It really was not any type of inconvenience to have you guys stay with us. You guys were always so welcoming with your house. You guys always threw good BBQs and pool parties. But it wasn't so much the house or parties..it was the family in it. Not only will you rebuild, but you'll be stronger and may your new home be even better! By the way I have to let the world know that after you guys left my house you gave back in return (jackets for my kids, liquor, cleaned up the basement and gave two crates of groceries). Only you guys who are left without home would still try to give back!
