Elizabeth Hart11.6.12 ♥ Round two with Amelia's doctor - brings us home with more meds and more time to..... wait.... ::sigh:: Poor baby.... I wish there were something more that could be done, but it's a matter at this point, of just letting the tissue heal until doc can really see beyond the damage and get behind the corneas into what may be causing her blindness.
This is Amelia's med schedule for the next... well.... till doc says otherwise.... we'll check back in a couple of weeks and he wants a daily photo journal of the progress (or lack, thereof) of her eyes via email in the meantime...
He's made a special serum using Amelia's own blood drawn this morning, which I am to administer as drops to both eyes three times a day... "pure liquid gold" he says - the main source of healing for this little girl is going to be her own antibodies - - the meds will hopefully help, but treating her eyes by using her own blood is going to be our best shot! ♥
8am - Blood Serum (promotes healing / decreases inflammation & infection)
Metacam (pain & inflammation)
9am - Tobramycin - (antibiotic)
Clavamox - (antibiotic)
10am - Optixcare - (surgical eye lubricant)
11am - Neopolybac - (antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory ointment)
12pm - Blood Serum
4pm - Neopolybac
8pm - Blood Serum
9pm - Tobramycin
Clavamox
10pm - Neopolybac
11pm - Optixcare
Doc reports that her right eye remains cloudy with vascularization and the left eye has a large corneal ulcer with cloudy area and two red circular rings of vascularization. Left eye has pinpoint lesion in center / possible perforation ... this lesion has enlarged since last week's appointment - which is the biggest concern at this time. If that lesion (hole in the cornea) widens, we'll be looking at a serious situation which would likely require surgery in order to prevent further damage.
We discussed referral to a specialist - and will move forward with that following our next visit if there is no marked improvement.
If you would like to help with Amelia's care - please make your monetary donation directly to our ongoing fundraiser page at:
http://www.youcaring.com/fundraiser_details?fundraiser_id=7672&url=emmacleftpalatechihuahuafundingforrescuesor you may make a donation directly via Paypal to friendsofemmacpc@aol.com.
Lots of folks have been asking where they may send supplies and gifts for Amelia ... you are welcome to deliver any packages to the following address:

Elizabeth Hart(10/16/12) **Mama Notes** ~ (this is LONG - but I promise, it's not a livid rant, lol - - just some informative notations - and the ramblings of a woman lost in the thoughts of the day) ♥ ♥
I just want to bring to light an "outline" of sorts - of what these little ones endure when coming into rescue (whether it be a "formal" shelter or a private rescue home such as my own).
I think a lot of folks tend to overlook all that goes on "behind the scenes" in transitioning these little ones from the situations they come from - to "a brand new world"... so many think that a bubble bath, a trim and a little "good groceries" is all that these guys need - - but regardless of whether a puppy or dog comes in with obvious "conditions" / disease / infection / illness - - they ALL have to be treated as though they have been exposed to such.
This is in addition to any other health issue that may be evident or may reveal itself during evaluations.
This particular note isn't about what we ALL know.... that these animals need love, care, attention, mental and emotional stimulation, compassion, patience, time, nurturing.............. THIS is about the hard core, bottom line dollar that it takes to accomplish even ONE successful rescue.
We had an outpouring of support for Marilyn - - and I feel blessed to have been able to play a small part in giving that baby girl a new lease on life... she SURVIVED - because of the hearts she touched and the kindness of strangers.
However ~ funds in ANY rescue are very quickly depleted.... adoption fees help to bear the brunt of some of the day to day necessities - - but they give us no cushion for urgent situations - (like pulling these six kids from the hoarder home)... or for planned medical interventions / surgeries - (like having Emma tested for Cushing's Disease and her oral surgery performed)... or for possible long-term support - (like for our little "shaker puppy" Morkie boy - or even for Stella & Claire - who are so consumed by fear that I'm not certain the damage can ever be undone)...
I'd like to share with you the list below - which is just the medical aspect of what each rescue such as "the hoarder pull" entails. This listing is the combined medical requirements for the first 7 days that these six dogs are in my care...
From the first day in, the expenses build....
K9 Advantix - x6 - - flea / tick / mosquito control
Bio Case Pro V Capsules - x120 (2 capsules 2x daily for 5 days) - supportive supplement for flea anemia
Pyrantel Liquid Wormer - x12 (1 dose repeated in 7 days) - roundworms and hookworms
Panacur Liquid Wormer - x18 (1 dose repeated 3 consecutive days) - whipworms and Taenia tapeworms
Droncit Tablet - x6 - various types of tapeworms
Albon Liquid - x42 (1 dose repeated 7 consecutive days) - broad spectrum antibiotic & coccidia treatment
Metronidazole Tablet - x42 (1 dose repeated 7 consecutive days) - giardia treatment
Penicillin G Injection - x60 (2x daily each for 5 days) - broad spectrum antibiotic for bacterial infections
Doxycycline Capsule - x42 (1 dose repeated 7 consecutive days) - upper respiratory treatment
Posatex - x30 - (1 dose repeated 5 consecutive days) - inner ear infection treatment
Vanguard® Plus 5 Vaccination - x6
(and that is all BEFORE any type of vet visit!)
Rabies Vaccination - x6
Bordetella Vaccination - x6 (as applicable)
Heartworm Test - x6
Heartgard - x6
**Spay / Neuter - x6 (unless adopted on a spay / neuter contract)**
And then... provided we encounter no problems or health concerns - animals being transported out of state require a vet certified health certificate / travel kennel w/ soft travel bed and accessories / transport expenses (these expenses, along with air delivery are paid for by the adopter, but I will occasionally help with ground rescue transport trains as I am able)
This does not even take into consideration the common expenses such as food, additional supplements (for failure to thrive or vitamin deficient situations), potty pads, toys / treats, harnesses / leashes, baby gates, bowls, playpens (for newborns and very young pups), transport kennels, blankets / towels / bedding, grooming supplies, etc. (it's never-ending...)
And then there's "marketing"... yep, even in rescue.... if no one KNOWS about the animals - no one can ADOPT the animals...........
Add in the "simple" extras that rarely are taken into account, like the higher water bills, electric bills, gasoline, vehicle repairs............ it all comes into play.
Now - - this is not intended to be viewed as a "complaint list" or a "rant".... I am simply trying to bring to attention what is REALLY involved. (not that everyone doesn't already know these things... you all have pets - you know what proper care entails...) - but not everyone thinks about it or recognizes it in rescue... folks think - "Oh they're SAFE!! YES!! They're in good hands now..." ::big sigh of relief:: (when really, the work has only just begun!) - and "anything would be better than where they came from" and "they wouldn't even be alive if...." - - - and all of that is fantastic - but it takes MORE......... always, constantly, infinitively MORE...
THAT's the hardest part of doing what I do... getting people to really see what's involved - and garnering the compassion of people to help...... because ultimately - we are at the mercy of strangers....
That being said - - I wouldn't change what I do, what I have accomplished, what I strive for every single day - - in any way, shape or form when it comes to the animals.... I have wished I had been born wealthy - - but those are not the cards I was dealt.... soooooo....... we push on.......... and we count on YOU!! =)
We revel in the successes together... we suffer the heartbreak ... we rejoice in the "happy endings".... it's a partnership that I am eternally grateful for.... yet unable to ever repay....
Thanks for being here.... and for your continued love and support........... some days - it's tough to drag out of bed and face the day - but the squeals of babies and the bickering of toddlers - - the fluffy faces and tiny pawprints - - make each effort - WORTH IT!!
~ Sweet dreams everyone.......... ♥ ♥ ♥

Elizabeth Hart(10/16/12) ~
We'll have a follow up and full exam with our vet in a week or so to confirm, but our little "wobbly" Morkie boy is likely stricken with "Shaking Puppy Syndrome" (Hypomyelination)...... **NOT a canine version of "Shaken Baby Syndrome" which is due to brain trauma by shaking a child - this condition develops due to the insufficient production of a chemical called Myelin...**
It seems to be a pretty mild case at this point, as he is MUCH improved from when he was just a few weeks old - (remember the video where he could barely walk and kept tumbling over?) - according to vets, there is no treatment for this condition and puppies usually will "grow out of it" by the time they reach a year old (or even long before!) and live a long, healthy life.
Our little guy is otherwiseperfectly normal... (never had the inner ear infection that we thought was causing him to become unstable) - and I'm about to post a video of this morning's puppy-cam highlights... it's a bit tougher to pick our "shaker puppy" out of the group these days - he runs, plays, hops and is as silly as the rest of the boys... but watch closely and you'll be able to point him out a little way into the video.
For your own reference, I am adding a link here that will tell you more about Shaking Puppy Syndrome as well as linking to a YouTube video of a very severe case in a little Chihuahua pup.... (this puppy actually passed away later due to a severe brain defect) **ps - ignore the part about the dashboard bobble head comment**

Elizabeth Hart(10/16/12) ~ Here's an update of what's going on around here..... Ohhhh what I get myself into!!!
6 rescues from a hoarder situation... I picked them up on Friday and they are settling in nicely... one at a time here with me, the others with friends here locally - please click on the link to read the full story and follow through to view photos as I update through their progress...
Would you all please share the link wherever and as often as you can?
I'll update as I can.... it's a big job, just getting them all evaluated and cleaned up after their ordeal..... if you click on the link to the first photo on Facebook, (and then click "see more" in the description) - I've included all of the details that I have right now....
They will be available for adoption just as soon as I can determine all the necessary aspects and assure they are healthy, vaccinated, heartworm tested, wormed and treated against any parasites and possible infections.... they will all be placed with a spay / neuter contract and our standard adoption agreement.
I am always open to working with any transport team if new families are out of state - - otherwise, air shipping is available for an additional cost.
The best thing to do for the time being is to share this link to get as much interest as we can in order to get the funds raised for their care and have homes waiting for them when they are ready...
Thanks, as always ~ for your help! ♥

Here is the first of the group - making her debut' after just a couple of days!!

Elizabeth Hart** Emma UPDATE ** (9.24.12)
In addition to addressing the needs of all of our other rescue babies here - Miss Emma is in need of some serious (and costly) dental work in order to save what few teeth she was able to grow due to the cleft. Due to the "near misses" with the anesthesia during her previous surgeries - I have been extremely hesitant to "put her under" again - but at this point, we don't have a choice if we are to sustain her adult teeth. Emma has always had some vitamin / mineral deficiencies - (which have been addressed on numerous occasions - always with no confirmed cause or successful supplemental treatment...) - **she is to be tested for Cushing's Disease - among other things - once funds become available - to establish new treatment for the hair loss and excessive dental deterioration** So, despite regular brushing, wipes and supplements - the premature progression of deterioration continues...
In the mean time, she needs to get in to our local Veterinary Dentistry Specialist to address current obvious issues with the abnormal growth and ill condition of the teeth that she does have.
As you can see in the photos, the cleft of the hard palate was never repaired - and is wide open directly to the nasal cavity.... for this reason, Emma is cared for "with kid gloves" as there is a constant threat of - not only aspiration of food / liquids - but the inhalation of ANY foreign body which - with the large opening - leaves endless possibilities for danger. (hair, fibers, dust, dirt... ANYTHING the size of the tip of a pencil eraser, could become inhaled through - or lodged in - the cleft.
Right now, we are not aware of any Veterinarian in the country who is able to successfully repair such a deformity - - however, we never stop looking!
If you would like to aid us in our ongoing fundraising efforts to support Emma's care and treatments - as well as the care of all of our rescue babies, please make a financial donation here to our efforts and share the link requesting the help of others! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Elizabeth Hart**UPDATE** ~ (9.19.12)Yesterday (Tuesday 9.18.12) I drove Marilyn to Texas A&M in College Station, Texas for her pre-op testing and final evaluations prior to her open heart surgery to correct the Patent ductus arteriosus(PDA).
She was to remain in the hospital through Friday which was the newly scheduled date for her surgery.
Below are a few updates for today:♥ ♥ ♥ Ohhhhhhhhh my gosh!! YAY!! Fabulous news from Marilyn's doctor just now!! ::sigh of relief:: I missed the call but he left a wonderful message .......... One - he says "everyone LOVES Marilyn" - - haha.... Two - she's doing beautifully there, "just hangin' out in her cage till somebody else comes along to play with her" ♥ ♥ She is eating well, happy and having a grand ol' time it seems!! (that's my girl - turning every experience into an adventure!!) ♥ ♥ Lastly ~ (and OMG - most exciting!) - he was able to talk with the hospital administrator and get Marilyn approved for a $1000.00 grant towards her surgery!!!! YES!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ MANY MANY THANKS to the WONDERFUL folks over at Texas A&M (and the sources from which the funds have come) for such a precious gift!!!! So much love for this little girl!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ And thanks to all of YOU for your ongoing support - not only with Marilyn - but over years past, with Emma - and with all of our little rescue faces that have found their way into our hearts and home!! xoxoxoxo Have an AMAZING day folks!!! ♥ ♥ ♥
♥ ♥ ♥ Another quick update - - just spoke with the surgeon who will be performing Marilyn's heart surgery - - they will be taking her in tomorrow morning - - she's first on the list - so they say that she will go in around 10am..... please keep our little girl in your thoughts tomorrow as you go about your day. ♥ ♥ ♥

Elizabeth Hart**UPDATE** (9.11.12) ♥We have just six days left before baby Marilyn goes in to Texas A&M for pre-op testing - at which time, we are to have payment ready to proceed with her surgery..... thanks to YOU all - we're getting closer!!
We're not there yet - and we still have a ways to go - but we're almost at the half way mark!!
Marilyn continues to do pretty well awaiting surgery.... she has started coughing a little bit - which is said to be a symptom of the onset of congestive heart failure..... we're aware of it - watching it closely - and hoping that progression will be slow while we attempt to raise the rest of the funds needed for the surgery to correct her heart defect.
There are lots of ways to help.... as noted in updates below with links to our different fundraising activities - all of which are ongoing to aid in the care of all of our rescue pups.....
Right now - for Marilyn - direct donations via this monetary campaign are the best and most efficient way to offer your support in helping to assure that she receives the life-saving procedures scheduled with Texas A&M next week.
Please continue to share the link to this campaign and let's see if we can use these last few days to set the wheels in motion for this baby girl!!
"Throw a pebble in the water........... make a wave........ make a wave..........."
Thanks everyone, for your continued love and support!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Okay ladies n' gentleman ~ skins n' furs ~ if you have the time and the desire to help (and I hope you do) ~ let's get to cleaning out those closets and drawers! ♥
We need AUCTION ITEM DONATIONS ~ ~ I know that we have LOTSof "doggie couture" boutique business friends here and all of the rest of us have a million things lying around that our furbabies can't, don't or won't use / wear / play with - and lots of other items (pet related or otherwise) that may bring a few bits towards helping us get where we need to be with the expenses for Marilyn's surgery and the rest of the furfaces here! ♥ ♥
Let's come together and do some damage here!! ♥ If you have items that you'd like to donate to the auction, please message me with photos / item descriptions / retail value and I'll get 'em posted immediately to benefit these kidlins'!! ♥ (Auction items run for 1 week and then you ship out to the winning bidder - that simple)
**repeat** Items do NOT HAVE TO be pet related OR Chihuahua related - ANYTHING of value will be happily accepted and greatly appreciated!! ♥
I know that we don't all have a lot of extra cash on hand to help out - - but we ALL HAVE STUFF and a few minutes of time to give!! ♥
Some of you may already know, but yesterday - in the wee hours of the morning - we were graced with four newborn rescue babies.... (one of which - was born with a cleft!)
A night / day of tragedy, unrest and new beginnings at our house... keep updated on Emma's page if you'd like to follow ...... in the mean time, I'd like to introduce you to the newest members of the Hart family of rescue babies........ (it's gonna' be a longgggggg couple of months!!)
With all of the excitement of the past 24 hours - I can't forget (nor let YOU forget, lol) that we have just 11 days until baby Marilyn is scheduled to go in to Texas A&M for her 2nd echocardiogram, radiographs, EKG, bloodwork and other pre-op testing - - at which time, I am supposed to have the full amount for her heart surgery in hand so that the doctors may proceed with the procedure the following morning.............. we are NOWHERE CLOSE to where we need to be on the numbers in order to make that happen at this point.... Marilyn needs your help! ♥
I can (and am more than happy to) throw myself into the "hard work" of the day to day in caring for the lil' angels that I take in... but when it comes to the "big jobs" in providing for them from a medical expenses standpoint - - I can't do it alone and I have to rely on others to step up, come together and lend a hand... for that hand, I appreciate you dearly!! ♥ ♥ ♥
Thanks as always ~ much love!! xoxoxo ♥

Elizabeth Hart**UPDATE** (9.3.12)
Little Marilyn continues to do very well while awaiting her surgery. Couldn't get her in on Friday for her 3rd round of puppy vaccinations - but will be taking care of that on Tuesday. No signs of congestive heart failure - - she's maintaining her heart rate, is having no hypoglycemia issues - she's eating well, gaining weight and I couldn't be more content with her current stability in preparation of her surgery.
We have just two weeks to raise the funds for Marilyn's pre-op testing and surgery with Texas A&M... we still have a LONGway to go!
I've posted some fun t-shirts and things on Emma's website to aid our efforts - and we are getting some lovely item donations for our ongoing auction over on the Facebook group page. We need some additional entries in the photo contest (great prizes!) - - so there are MANYways you can help us get to where we need to be with financing the procedures that Marilyn and the girls need.
Here is a link to the "current fundraisers" page on Emma's website..... LOTS of details and information there with links that will lead you to all of the activities.... spend a little time (and money! ha!) and check it out - share with everyone you can - and know that WEAPPRECIATE YOU!! xoxoxo

Quick update just to let everyone know that baby Marilyn goes in for her exam with the specialists of cardiology over at Texas A&M on September 18th for final evaluations and pre-op testing. If all goes well, she will have to stay overnight and have her surgery following morning.
In the mean time, let's get those funds raised so we don't have to postpone the surgery!!!
Thank you so much for your love and support!! It's because of YOU that baby Marilyn will have a chance!!

Elizabeth Hart**UPDATE** (8.29.12)
Marilyn is doing well so far, awaiting her surgery - - - I'm almost certain that we've decided to have the procedure performed here in Texas (to save on travel expenses) rather than traveling to Colorado as her doctor suggested be considered.
Per her doctor yesterday afternoon, expenses for Marilyn are looking to be around $3500.00 (low end of the ballpark figure) with pre-op care and testing / the surgery itself / after care and the basics.
**This of course, does not take into account, the required funding necessary for the needs of Emma's dental surgeries, evaluative testing and radiographs - nor the care of Stella and Claire which all are likely to add another $4000.00 to our required funding need - - - though Marilyn's case is URGENT at this point and must take priority.**
I must continue to ask for your support in helping us to garner the necessary funds to get baby Marilyn in for her open heart surgery... her doctors are "ready to roll" with it - we are just working on raising the funds.
I'm told that the particular procedure that Marilyn is to undergo - shows its best success rates when performed on otherwise healthy puppies between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks old.... Marilyn will be 13 weeks old on Friday.
To date, Marilyn is not showing any obvious signs of serious distress - and we're hoping she can hold out a little bit longer while we continue working towards funding her surgery.
Please consider helping us reach our goal in providing what these lil' ones need in order to survive.
Thank you for your continued love and support!

Elizabeth Hart**UPDATE** (8.26.12)
Received a message this morning from Marilyn's doctor - confirming the diagnosis of PDA per the results of her echocardiogram on Friday. She will not survive without surgery. I will consult with him tomorrow to plan the next steps.... While awaiting surgery, I was provided with symptoms to watch for regarding congestive heart failure - none of which she is showing today..... Please find it in your heart to make a donation to Marilyn's care and treatment... without this funding - her surgery will not be possible. Marilyn is just 12 weeks old... she has a long life to live!! Please help us give her a chance....

The lil' munchkin had her echocardiogram and we're hoping to have some results early next week. Everything had to be sent over to the specialist to be read - but the tech who did the test had a really hard time getting any good images..... the whole thing may need to be redone - in the specialist's clinic - with different equipment - since Marilyn is so small - (they may need "pediatric" equipment) - and they may need to sedate her for another echo.... At this point, we don't know if there is any usable material for an accurate reading. (I hope the effort - and the expense - wasn't wasted...)
She was such a good girl......... took over an hour.....

Elizabeth Hart**UPDATE** (8.21.12)
We've just returned home from the vet with little Marilyn and have received a preliminary diagnosis of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA): a congenital heart defect... her heart murmur is rated a high 6 of 6 - - which pushes our efforts into "urgent" status, effective immediately. Marilyn must have an echocardiogram and further testing - which, as we all know, is an expensive process. Treatment of PDA requires surgery for any chance of survival and under every circumstance. Please aid us with the expense of providing for Marilyn - as well as the basic care of our all of our Chihuahua girls - by donating items here, bidding, donating on our monetary fundraising page and sharing this information with everyone that you can.... your continued love and support CAN and WILL make the difference!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Rock on, Elizabeth!!! As the owner of a rescued Chihuahua, Omar, I applaud your efforts. When we adopted him we were told that his former owner had been involved in a drug bust, during which someone picked him up by his tail and slung him away. This damaged the bundle of nerves that has left him incontinent. I think he's perfect because when we travel I don't have to worry about getting the dog outside. He wears a sock with a Poise Pad lining it to catch his drippy pee and we stay on the lookout for anything that drops out. At first his tail just hung there but now he can wag it. I'm afraid that's all we're going to get after seven years. Love to you and all the little ones!
