My name is Grant Nawoichyk and I am a Life Scout from Boy Scout Troop 23 at West Point. I am currently planning my Eagle Project and I am seeking donations of some or all of the materials required to carry out my project. “The Trail of the Fallen” is a memorial dedicated to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation. This informal memorial was started in early 2002 for service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The project will formally recognize the trail with the Palisades Interstate Park Trail System, clearly mark the trail for hikers, provide two reflection areas at the trails end and QR codes which give hikers information on patriots who have given their life in the defense of our great Nation.

My Eagle project will be to formalize “The Trail of the Fallen” and to rehabilitate the Torne Trail which is part of the Palisades Interstate Park Trail System and the 1777 Trail. The project has four main components which include placing an information kiosk at the trail head, two granite reflection benches at the memorial at the end of the end of the Trail of the Fallen, placing virtual tombstones on the benches, as well as blazing of the trail. This project takes place on Mine Torne Road near Bear Mountain, New York. I would like to begin executing my project at the end of March and complete it by mid-April 2014.

My total fundraising goal is $5,000. The total estimated cost of supplies and materials for the project is $4,200. The additional $800 will be provided to the Parks Commission for future upkeep and maintenance of the trail. I am very grateful for any assistance you can provide me towards completing my Eagle Project. Your support and encouragement is deeply appreciated. Thank you so very much for your time.

I was out at Bear Mountain today making planning measurements on the kiosk near the Ice Rink. I hope the snow melts so I am able to break ground on my timeline. I can't believe how much snow is still on the ground!

I am very lucky to have had several people volunteer to help me with technical expertise. That is so cool! I am looking to start my project on 29 MARCH and complete it on 30 MARCH. Thank you again to all of my supporters!

Today, 20 FEB 2014, marks the 3rd anniversarry of 1LT Daren Hidalgo (USMA Class of 2009) being KIA in Mama Kiriz, Afghanistan. On the first anniversary of his death, we did a butterfly release, this year as I am preparing for the final benches to be approved, I remember what Daren's father told me about how much Daren loved the Hudson Valley and I am more motivated to get started on my project. Daren was truly a special person to me. He was a son, brother and amazing friend! I join his family today, in remembering Daren and knowing three years later, the pain is not any less from his loss.

I shared with you that there will be two reflection benches, the other is for MAJ Thomas 'TK' Kennedy. He was a son, brother, husband, father and my friend. I cannot measure how his loss has changed my life; I only know that it will never be the same. I heard someone say once that it is our responsibility to make sure that their sacrifice are not in vain. This is my motivation to remember my friends and all of our Nations fallen patriots.

Both Daren and Tommy had their lives cut short too soon. I hope to make their families very proud by adding to the legacy they have left behind and show anyone who stops by the "Trail of the Fallen" the way they have touched my life.

New York has had nothing but snow, ice and rain for months. Today, the sun is out and shinning very brightly. Daren and Tommy rest in peace at the West Point Cemetery and I am very lucky to be able to visit my friends and be reminded of the real life heroes I know.

Thank you so much for all of the support and encouragement I have received with my Eagle Scout Project! With online and mailed in donations, I have been able to achieve my fundraising goal of $5,000.00

I am in the process of approving the bench design. In addition, I am working hard on the kiosk plans - which will be the most challenging portion of the project. Hopefully the 3 feet of snow the Hudson Valley has gotten will be melted by 29 MARCH so I can start my project as scheduled!

Please look in the PHOTO GALLERY tab to see new pictures from an early morning hike I took today with my family (Sunday, 2 FEB 2014). The icy conditions and blanket of snow made it challenging, but you can see from the pictures it is really a pretty view from the top! I hope you like them.

Yesterday (Friday) was an amazing day for the "Trail of the Fallen" Project. It was so cool to watch on Facebook how many people shared the link, commented on it, encouraged me and made donations to help my project. In case you have been following my progress here is an update: in one day with your help I was able to raise over $1,300! I have had some supporters donate by check so my current fundraising total is $3,320.

I am looking forward to getting started on my project but more than anything, after reading all of your comments it makes me feel really good to know you all are just as excited about seeing the project completed and being able to explore the trail. I don't ever want to forget any of our soldiers who gave everything for our country. I believe this is a great legacy for their family and friends to explore and know that they are cared about so much for the sacrifice they made for me and my family.

Thank you so much for your support!

I wanted to take a minute and say THANK YOU to all of my supporters - everyone who has sent me notes, texts, emails, FB messages and cards to encourage me; called me to tell me a story about your Eagle Project or time in Scouting and motivate me, made donations and sent checks in the mail; if you shared my project, read through this website or talked about it - THANK YOU!

Please know how important this place on top of Mine Torne Mountain is to me; I want to give back to my community and have a place where everyone can remember the sacrifice of our soldiers and families because we can never forget them. I really am grateful for your support and it's awesome how much fundraising has happened already!

With mailed in donations, I just went over $2,000!!!! That's so cool!!

I had a great meeting with Mr. Dan Nolan from Nolan Monuments who is helping me with the reflective benches. The benches will be a "Pennsylvania Mist Granite" that blends with the surrounding natural stone. It is a black with natural lines of grey. They will be 3' long providing a place to sit and look out at the Hudson Valley.

Mr. Larry Beckerle of Beckerle Lumber is helping me with the lumber and materials for the kiosk at the Trail of the Fallen, trailhead. I have gotten so much help so far! Thank you so much for your suport!! I will keep you posted on my progress!

WOW! Thank you so much for the amazing support in just 24 hours since I launched this fundraising page! I can't believe it! It's so awesome to see how many of you have helped me raise a huge chunk of money towards my goal! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I am so excited to get started on my project. Today I have a day off from school, I am going to talk to several great people who are providing supplies for the Trail of the Fallen.

The first is supporting the two reflective benches which will go at the very top of the memorial trail - one bench will be anchored and will over look the Hudson River and the Bear Mountain Bridge. The other looks out towards Central Valley and the really pretty landscape. There are eagles in those trees.

The second person I am going to see, is hopefully going to help with materials to build the kiosk at the beginning of the trail head. I will keep you posted on how I make out!

Thanks again everybody!
