The GJHS Tiger football team wants to build a 5 story building in the slums of Mathare, just outside Nairobi, Kenya. The 5 story building will house a clinic on the first floor and low income apartments on the other 4 floors. The income from the apartments will go to pay for the children living in the slums to go to school. It costs between $350-$2000 a year to go to school and the people of Mathare only make a $1 a day, so it is impossible to get your child in school. This project will allow many children the opportunity to go to school and it will also allow the people to receive much needed medical care. The Grand Jucntion Football Team wants to see this project completed, they want to make a difference, "One Starfish at a Time."
One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back they will die." "Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can't make a difference." After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man he said, "That one is glad I helped him!" by Loren Eiseley
