A split second. That's all the time it takes to change your entire life. Unfortunately, Toby found that out the hard way. Toby is originally from Toronto, Canada. While on a vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with friends, Toby met an American woman from New York named Antonella. They hit it off immediately, and this chance encounter quickly grew into a deep and profound love that would change both of their lives forever. Toby often jokes "I went to Mexico to get drunk .. and I fell in love instead!" While dating, Antonella and Toby outlasted the challenges of a long-distance relationship, traveling internationally to see each other at least once a month. In December 2010, Toby proposed to Antonella on her birthday, but it wasn't until September 2011 that he was finally able to make his big move to New York. Just a few days later, Toby and Antonella were married in a small private civil wedding ceremony at City Hall, with a larger church celebration was being planned for April 29, 2012. Like any good red-blooded Canadian man, Toby was a big ice hockey fan, passionately following the sport he had played for most of his life. It was perfectly natural that he decided to join a local recreational league in his new adopted hometown of New York, continuing to play a game he had been playing since he was 4 years old. He looked forward to his games every week, never expecting the cruel twist of fate that would change his life forever. On the night of October 26, 2011 Toby was doing something he had always loved, playing the game of hockey the way he had for so many years. At the World Ice Arena in Flushing, Toby had just skated through his opponents and scored a beautiful goal, when he slammed into the boards and fractured his spine, causing a T11/T12 spinal cord injury and leaving him with no feeling or movement below his hips. He underwent a 6-hour surgery, where rods and screws were inserted to stabilize his vertebrae. He spent 7 weeks at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, NJ and was recently transferred to the Lyndhurst Rehabilitation Centre in Toronto for additional care. Both are among the very best facilities in the US and Canada for this type of injury. Once he completes his in-patient rehabilitation program at Lyndhurst, Toby will need to continue with an out-patient plan. Traditional spinal cord injury rehabilitation programs have focused on helping individuals learn ways to compensate for disabilities. But now, new centers like Theraputix (www.theraputix.ca) and Walk It Off (www.walkitoffrecovery.org) have already had encouraging results with their patients. Therapists create programs based on the premise that patients may be able to actually recover function. Their approach is to stimulate the nervous system by performing repetitive, manual manipulation of the paralyzed areas of the body with intense retraining. Toby has already been going to Theraputix for the LokoMat Gait Training, where he is suspended above a treadmill in a harness and a robotic machine is attached to his legs to allow them to move in a natural walking motion. He is also planning to go to Walk It Off for additional weight bearing, nerve stimulating exercise and FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) therapy. Unfortunately, neither Theraputix or Walk It Off is covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance) or personal insurance plans in Canada or the United States. LokoMat costs $125 per session, or $625 per week. Walk It Off costs $200 per day, or $1,000 per week. Toby arrived in America in love, excited to begin a new chapter of his life. In a split second, his dreams for the future were devastatingly taken away from him. Now, instead of planning a wedding celebration, going on a honeymoon, and starting a life with his new bride in a new country...Toby is fighting all day, every day, just to walk again. Toby wants, and deserves, to dance at his wedding, to teach his son Phynix how to skate, and to someday walk his daughter Saphyre down the aisle. Please help us give him a better chance by providing him with the treatment he needs and deserves. While he has the best care available to this point, Toby needs some help to get a chance at an innovative new treatment so he can one day walk again. A chance that may help him recover above and beyond what is normally covered by the American or Canadian health care systems. Toby wants his life and his future back. We ask you to spread the word to your friends and family. No donation is too big or too small, we appreciate anything you can give. All money will be used for Toby's rehabilitation and medical costs not covered by insurance. If you know Toby, you know how strong he is, and how hard he will work to recover. He has been incredibly strong and brave in the face of this adversity, with an unrelenting belief he will recover to lead a full life and make all those dreams a reality. We believe that one day, Toby will stand strong and walk again. We believe in tomorrow.

Toby was discharged from Lyndhurst last week. After spending close to 5 months in a various hospital settings, it was both a happy, yet sad, day for us. Toby's goal since day one had always been to be able to walk out of there on his own, so it was absolutely heartbreaking that this wasn't the case. But as we said our good-byes and our thank yous, he said he would be back to visit one day when he was walking again to surprise them all. :)

So we headed up Keswick, just north of Toronto, to where his parents live and have somewhat modified their home in preparation for him. He is still using a temporary "sample" wheelchair, but a new one was ordered for him and should be ready in a few weeks. The total cost was about $8k, but luckily Ontario has a program to help with funding, so we ended up paying just over $3600.

While I have been here in Canada with him, I have been able to drive him down to North York (about 45 minutes away) every day to go to the Theraputix Wellness Centre. His main therapists, Angelo and Joey, have been amazing .. actually, so is everyone else there. He's now up to 30 minutes on the Lokomat and his muscles have been showing more reaction and strength over the last week.

So we keep going, and we keep praying .. just taking it one day at a time.

I just wanted to share something that I just read in an article:

A group of incomplete quadriplegics in a Toronto study gained meaningful voluntary hand function after undergoing a few weeks of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). FES systems have gotten quite sophisticated and have been in use for a number of years, even commercially, but what is quite remarkable in this study is the therapy seemed to reawaken arm and hand muscles. Increased hand function seems to be permanent without continued FES therapy.

Toby went to this center today, which is near Lyndhurst, his current rehab hospital. He had an assessment done and was able to get on the Lokomat for 20 minutes. The therapist said his leg muscles showed activity when connected to the machine and tested, which is definitely a positive thing. He had encouraging stories of patients that have come in for treatment on this machine, even many years after their injury.

Even though he's still an inpatient at Lyndhurst, they agreed to let him start therapy there 3x a week beginning on Tuesday.
