Nelson Maldonado Vega, de 20 es un joven amoroso y genuino. Inteligente y exitoso. Nelson es un estudiante universitario, con especialización en Ingeniería Civil, recibió puntuaciones y premios en la escuela secundaria los cuales le permitieron ir a la Universidad y convertirse en un adulto exitoso para poder ser un buen contribuyente en la sociedad. ¡Él es tan querido y admirado por nosotros, su familia y amigos por todo lo que ha logrado!

El 28 de julio, temprano en la mañana del domingo en Ponce, Puerto Rico, la tragedia golpeo nuestra familia. Nelson salía de un estadio de baloncesto tras un gran juego del equipo de Leones de Ponce. Siendo una persona de buen corazón al igual que el resto de su familia, Nelson dejo montar voluntariamente un amigo con la necesidad de dejarlo de camino a su casa.

Cuando él estaba llegando a su destino, disparos los alcanzaron desde otro vehículo en movimiento. A su amigo le dispararon 5 veces y murió en la escena y resultaron heridos otros dos amigos. A Nelson le dispararon dos veces en el abdomen y el lado izquierdo de la pelvis, lo cual lo tiene actualmente en condición grave.

Desde el tiroteo, hace menos de 24 horas, Nelson ha tenido cirugía para reparar todo el daño hecho, resultando en la pérdida de un riñón. Lo cual se mantiene recluido en cuidado de intensivo, donde él espera más cirugías adicionales. Ha perdido una cantidad inmensa de sangre y cuando recupere, tendrá un fuerte camino por delante de él.

Nelson tiene lo que la mayoría de las personas en Puerto Rico utilizan para la salud, el plan de gobierno lo cual no es suficiente. Lamentablemente, su recuperación puede verse afectada por la capacidad de él y de sus padres para cubrir los costos. ¡Aquí es donde nosotros, su familia, amigos, compañeros, amigos de amigos debemos unirnos!

¡Nelson es nuestro querido miembro de la familia, un joven maravilloso con un futuro brillante!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nelson Maldonado Vega, 20 is a smart, loving and genuine young man.  Intelligent and successful.  Nelson is a University student, majoring in Civil Engineering, he received high scores and awards in high school allowing him the opportunity to go to University and so he can become a successful adult and positive contribution to society. He is so loved and admired by us, his family and friends for all he has done!
On July 28, early Sunday morning in Ponce, Puerto Rico, tragedy struck our family.  Nelson was leaving a basketball stadium following a huge game for the team Ponce Leones. Nelson being the kind-hearted person much like the rest of his family, willingly gave a friend a much needed ride to a destination on the way home.
As he was nearing the destination, shots rang out from another moving vehicle. His friend was shot 5 times and was killed at the scene and two other friends were injured.  Nelson was shot twice in the abdomen and left side of the pelvis, for which he is currently in serious condition.
Since the shooting less than 24 hours ago, Nelson has had surgery to repair all the damage done resulting in losing one kidney. He is still in ICU where he will be awaiting further surgery.  He has lost an immense amount of blood and when he pulls through, he will have a long tough road ahead of him.
Nelson has what most people in Puerto Rico have for healthcare, the state version which is nothing much, and usually just enough.  Sadly, his recovery may be affected by the ability of him and his parents to cover the costs. This is where WE, his FAMILY, FRIENDS, CLASSMATES, FRIENDS OF FRIENDS must come together!
Nelson is our beloved family member, a wonderful young man with a bright future please don't let his candle for a wonderful life burn out!
I am posting some great news.   A few hours ago Nelson Maldonado Vega was taken off the respirator (oxygen) because he started breathing on his own. He is now being moved to a room.  Thank god, does this kid have a will to live or what?!  It is amazing what the power of prayer can accomplish in such a short time.  Lets keep those prayers coming and any donations you can possibly give will now be even more appreciated.  God's blessings on you all.  This is Jennifer's mom updating from home in Ponce , Puerto Rico. She'll be updating later thank you again.
¡Buenos días a todos!
La familia Maldonado y Vega están inexplicablemente agradecidos por el gran apoyo que le han dado. ¡En tan sólo dos cortos días hemos recaudado más de dos mil dólares! Esto nos pone muy cerca de nuestro punto a mitad de camino de nuestro objetivo inicial.
Dicho esto, Nelson fue operado hoy. Hemos tenido gente de todo el MUNDO orando por él. Además de apoyar a su familia con buenos deseos, donaciones y “Likes”, estamos muy contentos de decir que Nelson esta a un paso mas hacia la recuperación ya que salió bien de la operación y ya el médico le cerro la herida. Actualmente se encuentra en estado crítico, pero estable. El color vuelve a su cara, una señal segura de que él está luchando muy fuerte para volver con buena salud.
Según ha dicho la familia, el hermano de Nelson, Andrés estaba con él antes de la cirugía. Nos dijo que él estaba sosteniendo su mano y le comentó cuántas personas estaban orando y esperando por él. Él le dijo a Nelson, el cual estaba inconsciente, “no sabía que fueras tan popular y famoso, todo el mundo está preocupado por ti" y Nelson ¡casi abrió los ojos y le apretó su mano!
Así que gracias a todos, la oración ¡sí funciona! hasta el día siguiente, amor y bendiciones para todos ustedes.
Hello Everyon!! I want to put an important notice out, there will be a Blood Drive for Nelson, on 2Aug!
It will be held in Ponce, PR please check out the Photo Gallery for more details in regards to the Blood Drive and THANK YOU!!! :)
Tips before a blood test:
  • Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet by eating iron rich foods, such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals and raisins.
  • Get a good night's sleep.
  • Drink an extra 16 oz. of water or nonalcoholic fluids before the donation.
  • Eat a healthy meal before your donation. Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice cream before donating. (Fatty foods can affect the tests we do on your blood. If there is too much fat in your blood, your donation cannot be tested for infectious diseases and the blood will not be used for transfusion.)
  • If you are a platelet donor, remember that your system must be free of aspirin for two days prior to donation.
  • Remember to bring your donor card, driver's license or two other forms of ID.
My own personal tip is that I tend to have low hemoglobin, and would get rejected from donating blood. Which bothers me because I like to donate blood. Anyhow one phlebotomist told me that if I munch on Raisinets before I go to donate it will raise my iron levels! :) Plus its yummy! :)
Tips above as well as more can be found at the website below :)
Good Morning Everyone!!!
The Maldonados and the Vegas are so inexplicably grateful and thankful for the overwhelming support you have given! In just two SHORT days we have raised OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!! This puts us very close to our halfway point for our initial goal!
With that said, Nelson underwent surgery today.  We have had people ALL OVER THE WORLD praying for him. As well as supporting his family with well wishes, donations and the like! We are so very happy to say that Nelson is another step closer to recovery and he made it out of surgery and the doctors have closed him up! He is currently in critical but STABLE condition. The color is returning to his face, a sure sign that he is fighting so hard to return to good health!
As far as word from family, Nelson’s brother Andres was with him before surgery. He told us that he was holding his hand and telling him how many people were praying and hoping for him. He told Nelson who was unconscious, “I didn’t know you were so popular and famous, everyone is worried about you” and Nelson almost opened his eyes and squeezed his hand!
So thank you all!! Pray does WORK!!! J until next update, love and blessings to you all!!!
