Will Lockwood is 37 years old. Until Christmas Eve 2011, his life was like that of any other loving father and young man whose future was bright and full of plans. On that day, he mentioned that he had been losing weight without trying and had felt a small lump under his rib cage. He had no other symptoms or indication that anything was wrong. He began a series of tests which ultimately resulted in the diagnosis of metastatic cancer involving his bile duct, liver, lungs and other organs. On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, Will started chemotherapy and began a fight for his life. His prognosis is poor, but he is also fighting for his family and has hope that he can beat the medical odds. Will is the father of three young boys. Alex is eight years old and has a smile that will melt your heart. He is intelligent, inquisitive and reflective. He is learning to play the piano and enjoys the game of kickball. Nicholas, at six, is the comedian of the family. His gregarious and outgoing personality is a magnet to all of his classmates. He is a zealot 49er fan and loves to play basketball. Little Zachary, at age 3, is a combination of his two brothers. He tries to mimic everything they do and, in the process, has learned to be tough. He is an expressive and affectionate free-spirit whose sport of choice is jumping on the trampoline. Will is also a loving husband to Tara, who is a conscientious and admirable mom who chose to devote herself to her children by staying home to care for them. Together they love to ride bikes, go on Saturday donut runs, take hikes, make s’mores and play cards. Will and his boys are learning to snow ski and join Tara in her love of the sport. This devastating medical news is a shock. No one would anticipate this, especially someone of Will's age. The diagnosis of his type of metastatic cancer at 37 years old is extremely rare. There are few young families fully prepared for a catastrophic event like this. Their medical and related expenses are going to be overwhelming. If Will's cancer responds to chemotherapy, he will be able to go into a clinical trial at UCSF. He needs to focus fully on his treatment without the distressing worry of whether his family can financially survive. Will devoted six years to our armed forces in the Air Force branch of the military. He is not surrendering to his diagnosis. Please help him fight this battle.

Will's blood counts came up so that he was able to finish his chemotherapy.  On Monday, June 11, he had a follow-up PET scan which showed that most of his tumors have decreased in size.  Unfortunately, the tumor in his lung has grown. 
His platelet and blood cell counts are very low again so that further treatment is uncertain until these numbers are normal.  Will is spending an uplifting Father's Day week-end with his family and friends at peaceful and solacing Lassen Park.

We have extended the closing date for the fundraiser so that everyone can follow Will's progress on this site.
Will's blood counts are hovering around normal, so his medical team has decided that he will receive an 8th round of chemotherapy.  After this round, he will have another PET scan.

After completing five rounds of chemotherapy, Will required blood transfusions to boost his red blood cell count.  This improved Will's energy and helped with fatigue. However, a subsequent blood test showed that his white and red blood cell counts are still low and that his platelet count is below normal.  For the time being, the aggressive chemotherapy treatment he had been receiving will be discontinued until his blood cell counts and platelet counts are back to normal.
Will has faith in Dr. Verma 's expertise and wisdom. He has an incredible medical support team.   He knows he is in good hands and respects their acumen and judgment in discontinuing his medications for now. 
He is continuing his normal routine as much as possible, working from home, attending the boy’s ball games, watching the Giants with Alex and Nicholas, and reading.
He is holding on steadfastly to his optimism. He is a strong believer in the power of positive energy. Please send all of your positive energy and prayers his way during this complication in his treatment and uncertain time.

As Will completed his third round of chemotherapy, he was given more good news.  Another blood test showed that his tumor marker score has gone even lower.  The primary tumor is most likely half the size it was when originally diagnosed.  This welcome news will carry him into a wonderful spring break with Tara and the kids.  Happy Spring and Easter to all his supporters!

Will began round three of his chemotherapy on Monday, March 19, 2012, emboldened with the recent news that the tumor marker in his blood work showed improvement.  The main side effect of his treatment is still relentless fatigue, but he is emotionally strong and optimistic, bolstered by the love of his family and friends.

Prayers, positive thoughts and immense support WORKS!  The awaited CA19-9 marker test, an indicator of the cancer's progress, came back with great results. This chemo therapy is blasting Will's cancer cells with success. He still has a long journey, but this first hurdle is a big leap in the right direction. This Saturday, March 3rd, at Whiskey Creek the Grant School PTO is having their 2nd Annual Cougar Challenge Family Fun Run/Walk for preschoolers through 8th graders.  This year the PTO decided to make it an option to donate the registration fee to The Lockwood Family Cancer Fund.  This committee went one step further and printed the logo, TEAM WILL where there is a Will there is a way, on the backs of the T-shirts.  The Lockwoods have been so humbled by this community's spirit, support and generosity.  They are truly overwhelmed with the continued moral and financial comfort being given to them.

Will cherished his respite from chemotherapy last week by spending time with his Dad who came to visit from Missouri and by enjoying treasured moments fathers have with their children on a daily basis. On Tuesday, February 28, he completed his second round of treatment.He is hoping that an upcoming blood test checking for the 19-9 cancer marker will demonstrate that the treatments are working.

We can all imagine the fear and trepidation we would have knowing that with another treatment will come difficult side effects, and the conviction we must rally, in the face of this, to believe that we will beat the disease.Will has shown merciless drive and resolute courage in the face of disquiet.He is defying cancer with the best he has to give. Your patronage and words of encouragement have provided a foundation for Will’s bravery and fighting spirit.It is not necessary to donate financially in order to demonstrate your support through this web site.The "comments" tab provides space for your thoughts.  Any affirmations, favorite jokes, prayers, or wishes sent to him will help keep his morale soaring. We are all believers in Will’s strength and heart.Let’s keep telling him that.

Will has completed his first round of chemotherapy consisting of Gemcitabine and Cisplatinum.The most arduous part of this process was sitting for eight hours while receiving these potent medications.Luckily, he had visitors to keep him company most of the time.For a few days, the chief side effect was fatigue, but he was able to sleep while the drugs made their first assault against the cancer cells.Because chemotherapy can have a myelosuppressive effect, last Monday he received Neulasta, a white blood cell booster.Will experienced some bone pain while his bone marrow worked in overdrive to manufacture new, vigorous white blood cells.These cells will help to ward off infection so that he will stay healthy for his second round of chemo beginning Monday, February 27.He is looking forward to a week off so that he can have plenty of free time to spend with Alex, Nicholas, Zachary and Tara.He will be able to eat a lot of calorie dense foods to put back on some pounds.He plans to be strong and well rested for the next strike against this disease.Last Sunday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Will and others were honored at a mass celebrating the Miracle at Lourdes.This extraordinary  blessing  was emotionally stirring for Will, his family and his friends.Thank you, Dr. MaryBeth Stanton, for arranging this.The Stantons' support will not be forgotten.Please continue to keep Will in your prayers as he carries on his battle.

Will will be finishing up another round of chemotherapy next week.  This round has hit him particularly hard, so his medical team has determined he needs a break from treatment.  He is suffering from extreme fatigue, neuropathy pain, weakness, and dizziness.  Hopefully,  this break will be what he needs to get himself back on his feet.  He will have another PET scan in August to check his progress.  He and the kids are presently enjoying a visit from his Dad.

I survived 2 types of cancer and 1 doctor gave me 2 years to live but by God's grace and mercy, still around after more than 5 years. Look up to Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, He loves you and your family and His grace is sufficient for you. Will be praying for you and your family.
