Due to the overwhelming support the Syrian Dental Relief has experienced, the campaign has surpassed its initial goal many times. We are planning to expand the trip to help with refugee needs in addition to dentistry. The families of Deah, Yusor and Razan, and the Syrian-American Medical Society, would like to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone for their generosity in helping to carry out this mission of aid to those in need.

The remaining funds not spent on the Syrian Dental Relief mission will go to support the “Our Three Winners Trust”, which has been dedicated to Deah, Yusor, & Razans’ spirit of giving. This Trust has been established by the families and will be used to fund education and community service projects in the years to come. Thank you for your continued support!

The Syrian civil war is entering its fourth year, and with each day it continues to devastate the lives of those affected. International agencies estimate that more than 120,000 Syrians have been killed, more than 5 million have been internally displaced, and more than 3 million have become refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and other neighboring countries.
Overall, the dental situation in Syria and at the refugee camps has become desperate. Despite the governments' efforts to accommodate the overwhelming influx of refugees, facilities are not equipped to handle the number of patients with the limited funds available. In effect, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) has set up several polyclinics close to refugee-populated areas that are provide medical, pharmaceutical, and dental care. SAMS is also collaborating with the Miswak Foundation to help provide funds to run clinics and provide care to thousands of patients in need.
Goals of the Program:
Provide dental care to refugee students in Rihaniya, Turkey
In summer of 2015, I as well as ten local dentists and faculty from UNC School of Dentistry will embark on a trip to Rihaniya, Turkey to provide dental care to students of Salaam School. Salaam is a primary and secondary school providing education to over 2,000 students, with many more students expected to enroll throughout the year. Hundreds of students are currently in need of urgent dental care, mainly consisting of fillings and extractions. Following each procedure, we will provide oral hygiene instructions and fluoride treatment to prevent future tooth decay.
Increase dental health literacy within schools and refugee camps
When the dental clinics are closed, we will visit neighboring schools and refugee camps and pass out essential dental supplies (toothbrushes, toothpaste). Our goal is to increase the dental health literacy with an emphasis on prevention.
Raise funds to support local dentists
In Syria, brave dentists and assistants risk their lives to provide their services, despite deliberate attacks on their clinics. These incredible individuals volunteer their time, but lack basic necessities to continue their important work.
Purchase dental supplies and equipment for dental clinics
The dental clinics have very limited dental supplies and equipment needed to treat nearly 1,500 patients every month. $1,000 can cover the expenses of a full-time dentist and supply the clinic with essential dental supplies for one month.
Motivate accompanied pre-dental students to lead their own future endeavors
Bilingual pre-dental students will accompany any dentists who do not speak the native tongue to help translate and assist in procedures.
