Rory is a 15-year-old high school freshman &  my daughter.  She has suffered from headaches, dizziness, & balance problems since she was a little girl & was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation 2 years ago.  Chiari Malformation occurs when the cerebellum (the part of the brain at the bottom of the skull) is herniated through the foramen magnum (opening at the bottom of the skull through which the spinal cord passes to join the brain) into the spinal canal.  These cerebellar tonsils (named for their shape) cause compression of brain tissue & disruption of cerebrospinal fluid, which leads to the symptoms that Rory suffers from.  Since her diagnosis, we have tried every treatment short of surgery that we could find - dietary supplements, herbal supplements, change in diet, intensive physical therapy, pain medications, & anti-seizure medications.  Nothing has helped :-(  Rory has had to give up several sports & other activities that make her symptoms worse & has started missing more & more school since the headaches have started affecting her day-to-day life.  We finally have the opportunity to see a doctor at one of the few Chiari Centers in the United States, but we have to travel from Montana to New York in order to do so.   She'll have several pre-surgery appointments & she will be in the hospital for 4 or 5 days.  All in all I am planning to be in New York for at least 2 weeks.  The expenses are going to be more than my single-mom teacher's income can absorb.  I don't want anybody to donate more than they can afford, but every little bit will help <3></3>

Less than a week now till Rory's surgery!  We had her surgical consultation with Dr. Rekate this morning & I feel SO MUCH BETTER after meeting & talking to him!  No more doubts - we chose wisely!  Looks like we will be here for at least one week after the surgery.  We could use some more donations in order to afford tickets home - please help out if you are able to <3

Tomorrow marks one month out from Rory's surgery :-(  She has not been feeling well at all so we are anxious to get this over with.  Donations are still rolling in - thank you, thank you to all our sponsors!  Thanks to a VERY generous donation of tickets, we get to see the Broadway production of Lion King before the surgery, & take a bus/boat tour of New York & the harbor - so the trip won't be all bad!  Last visit to her local doctor this week to get the all-clear, then she starts weaning off all the pain medication & supplements.  It's going to be a long month!

Just a quick update - thanks to donations on this site & a private donor, I was able to buy our airline tickets out to New York!  One way - no return tickets because I don't know how long we'll have to stay out there.  I also got our hotel reservations - more expensive than I hoped but less than I feared, so we'll make it work somehow.  The most expensive part is renting a car :-( but I'm looking for ways to cut that cost without inconveniencing us too much.  A little over 8 weeks out from the surgery - I'm starting to get things checked off my to-do list in preparation.  Nervous but hopeful that it helps her.
