Ryan is a 20 year old, Colorado College student. On March 7th, 2014, he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. After two weeks in the ICU he was moved to Select Acute Care Hospital, where he currently resides. Every week he shows us beautiful signs of recovery by following commands, giving kisses, and speaking some words. But recovery is slow, difficult, and uncertain. His family needs financial support in order to keep giving him the help he needs.

Hello Everyone! Summer is winding down and what a Summer it has been! Time has flown by. We take this day to reflect and to celebrate. Reflect on what our family has been through and to celebrate Ryan's 21st birthday. He was born 21 years ago today (9/1/93). Other than catching a cold, Ryan has been doing better. Last week he had his evaluations with the Elks Outpatient Brain Injury Program. We are very impressed with their program and staff. Ryan did well during the evaluations and we are very excited to begin regular therapy sessions this week! We hope you all have had a great Labor Day weekend and were able to spend time with your families and friends!! The Guerra's

Hello Everyone,

Things have been hectic since returning home.  We have been working on getting Ryan into see a doctor and trying to get him set up with therapies.  We are finally making headway in these efforts.  Ryan finally saw a doctor yesterday and will soon be starting outpatient thereapy through the Elks Brain Injury Program!  One of the hardest things is to wait for the "system" to move.  We want everything done immediately.  Unfortunately, that's not how things work.

We have been making small updates to the house and we got the wheelchair ramp built today.  It is SO much easier getting him in and out.  Thank you to everyone that helped make this happen!!

Hello Everyone!

We are back home in Boise.  Thank you to everyone in Colorado Springs that helped Ryan and his family!!  You are all very special people!

Now that we are home, we are starting over with Ryan and his care.  So far,the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital here has been very responsive, kind and proactive!

We want to thank everyone here that helped pull together the Fundraiser last week and everyone that attended to welcome Ryan home! He had a good time seeing everybody! The money raised will go towards house improvements to make it more accessible for his disabilities. If you are interested in stopping by and visiting just give Vicky, Marty or Erik a call.

Thank you!!!

 Hello everyone,

Sorry, it's been a while since our last update!  We’ve had our hands full.

The big news is that we are taking Ryan home to Boise, and Erik will be starting college next month. Erik, we are so proud of you and how you’ve conducted yourself through all of this. We know it has not been easy.  We love you so very much!!

Ryan and his Mother will fly out next Wednesday, July 30th. Two very good friends of ours, Paula and Frank, will come out to CO and help with his transport.  Paula will help Vicky with flying Ryan home.  Frank will help Marty drive Ryan’s van and Marty’s car back to Boise.  Thank you both!!!

The decision to take Ryan home has been a difficult one since he has had so much support from his wonderful friends here in Colorado: City Rock Gym, Pure Bouldering, and Colorado College staff and teachers, etc.

A big thank you to Dave and Chrissy for allowing us to stay at their place.  It has been a comfort, and allowed us to transition Ryan out of the hospital setting.  We could not have gotten through this without all of you!  However, it is time to go home...

This move presents its own set of challenges.  The first is we will need our small home refitted to accommodate Ryan's needs.  This will be no small task as our house was built in the mid 1930's.

Your support has gone and will continue to go toward Ryan's medical expenses.  As tough as it is for us to ask, especially after all you have done already, we find ourselves needing additional help with refitting our home in Boise. So, If you are in Boise and can help with materials, labor, etc we would greatly appreciate your assistance!! If you wish to contribute financially, that too will be greatly appreciated!!

On a personal note. We, as parents, love and support our children through thick and thin. It is what we do.  What has been so comforting to us, is that so many others have loved and supported our boys through thick and thin.  It is so wonderful as parents knowing that others are and will be there for them! Thank you for loving and supporting our boys!!

Marty and Vicky

Hello everyone,

Sorry it's been a while since our last update.  Ryan has experienced somewhat of a "plateau" over the past couple of weeks.  Although, his balance and walking have improved, he requires 24 hour close supervision.

The big news is that the insurance company (Blue Cross of Idaho) has discontinued inpatient treatment for Ryan.  We had hoped to be able to place Ryan in a Subacute care facility once he left the rehabilitation hospital.  Unfortunately, this was not the case.  Blue Cross denied Ryan admittance in to that facility (and any like it) on Monday June 16th.  He has been discharged from the rehabilitation hospital as of today June 18th.

We have had to take Ryan into our care. Through the generosity of one of Ryan's professors and his wife, we have a place to stay in Manitou Springs, CO.

We appreciate all your thoughts and support.  Now that he does not have the benefit of in-patient care, we will appreciate even more visits.  We, however, understand that it is not as convenient now that he's in Manitou Springs.  The visits Ryan had from professors, friends, family and staff while he was in the inpatient care hospitals for the past three months, have been a form of therapy for him, and us alike.  It is even more critical that Ryan continue to get such visits moving forward.

Thank you everyone!!

After a week at home to celebrate Ryan's younger brother, Erik's, graduation, Mom is back in the Springs.

Ryan's parents went home for a bit to celeabrate Erik's high school graduation from Boise High.  It was a happy celebration!  "We are so proud of Erik!! Mom and Dad say.  It has been a really rough few months and Erik kept his focus on what he knew he needed to do."  Erik says that, "Ryan has always been a major influence in my school work."

Ryan had a bit of a setback during Mom, Dad and Brother's absence.  However, he has picked up the pace and has been doing very well the past several days since Mom's been back.

There is talk from Ryan's medical team regarding moving Ryan to a Neurobehaviorial facility in Tulsa Oklahoma where he can receive more intensive therapy. Ryan and his family are at the "mercy" of Blue Cross of Idaho.  It sucks, but it is the reality of our healthcare system!

The familily so very much appreciates everything you all have done!!  However, they need to reach their fundraising goal to help assure that Ryan can receive the best care possible. No matter where that might be!

"Our hearts and souls are humbled by everyone's compassion, love and support!"

Hello everyone,
Thank you all again for your continued support!!

Ryan has become more aware of his situation. Although, he doesn't know why he has ended up in the hopspital, he does know he is there and that things are different.  However this awareness is good (it shows that his brain is making connections), it comes with some frustration and depression.

We have entered a new phase of Ryan's recovery.  It has been a rough week for Ryan and his family.  Although, Ryan continues to make good progress overall, these "bumps in the road" make things a bit more challenging.

Ryan is eating well and there is talk that he will be getting the feeding tube removed soon. The BIG news from the past week is that Ryan has been gaining weight!! In addition, the weaher has improved here and he has been enjoying the Sun during his outdoor excursions!

Be well,

The Guerra's

Hello Everyone, we hope you are are all doing well!

It's been rather busy here on the 8th floor for Ryan.  He continues to impress!!
He is making very good progress in all his therapies.  The big news this past week is that he began eating "regular food," as he calls it, last Wednesday, April 30th. He started out with a lunch tray, added a breakfast tray a few days later, and he will begin to get a dinner tray tomorrow as well.

Another bit of progress his Ryan's voicing is getting stronger. Although, his left vocal-cord is not working at this time, his whisper and atriculation are improving.  His Doctors are confidnet that the vocal-cord will over time, bounce back.  His PT continues to work on Ryan's walking and balance.

Visits from friends help to keep his spirits up and he is watching a lot of netflicks (thank you, Tyler, for the use of the Ipad!).  The weather has been nice here in the Springs and Ryan has been enjoying his trips outside!

Thank you, as always for your love and support!!

Hello,
Another busy week here. Ryan is now now on 2 food trays per day. He is eating breakfast and lunch by mouth. He is scarffing down each one. Ryan is continuing to make progress in all areas.  His voice is getting stronger. Although, we did learn that his left vocal-cord is not working.  The Doctor his considering jinjecting fat or coligen into the left cord to thicken it up some so the right cord can articulate over to it. Ryan is voicing more often now on his own. This procedure should help him out.

Thank you all!

Hello,

It has been 7 weeks since Ryan entered the hospital.  It has been an emotioanl rollercoaster!  Today though, emotions are of the happy kind.  Ryan is continuing to make great progress.  He is connecting with friends and sharing lots of smiles.

The next big milestone will be to remove his feeding tube (PEG).  He is making strides in that direction.  Last week, he was given a piece of cake by his Speech Therapist.  He wasted no time scarfing it down.  It was slightly sofend with a little milk and he tolerated it just fine.  He's been taking honey thick liquids and had some pudding today.

Ryan's Physical Therapist is working on his standing balance and walking.
Good Progress is being made.  Occupational Therapy has been working on motor function. He has come a long way in that as well. His fine motor skills are getting better.  Ryan is trying really hard to speak. Speech Therapist is working on that. We are using simple hand signals such as Thumbs up/down for "yes" and "no," the "okay" sign, etc along with some words.  Although there is still a long road ahead, Ryan is impressing all of his Doctors, Nurses and Therapists with his determination and progress!  Go, Ryan!!

As always, THANK YOU to everyong for thier love and support of Ryan and our family!

Happy Easter!

Ryan has been in the rehab hospital 11 days now.  He is making good progress.  He finally had his trache removed and is much more comfortable.  Ryan enjoys the visits from his friends. He is engaging, smiling ear to ear and connecting.  It is awesome to see.  Currently his biggest challange is speech therapy.  His therapist works with him 2 or 3 times a day.  With the trache out now, the therapists excpects good progress moving forward.  He is trying very hard to speak. He will move his lips. sometimes we can make out what he's saying.  He is using some hand signals to communicate.

As we journey forward, support from friends, family and hospital staff are critical in Ryan's efforts to recover!  Thank you for your love, support and commitment to Ryan!

Be well!  You are in our thoughts.

Hello Everyone,

Ryan moved to Penrose Reabilitation on April 9th.  It was a busy day for him and his family.  The changes caused a little set back but that is expected.  He is getting settled in to a new routine and has made some progress by adding stairs to his physical and thickened apple juice to speach therapies. He is recognizing people, himself (in pictures and videos), etc.  We are very encougouraged by Ryan's determination!  He still has a long road ahead.  Go Big Ryan!!!

Thank you, every one! Your support and love mean so much to us and Ryan!

He is getting stronger and the doctor says that Ryan will likely be moved to a rehabilitation facility sometime this coming week.  That's good news!!  Ryan has expressed his desire to get out of the hospital!
