TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - U.S. Marshals in Kansas City, Missouri have captured a Tucson fugitive wanted in connection with a double homicide New Year's morning.

KGUN 9 On Your Side has learned that U.S Marshals and police in Kansas City captured Michael Leday, 28, Tuesday night.

Kansas City police chased Leday through the woods for roughly 30 minutes before snagging him, Tuesday night.

Leday faces two counts of first degree murder in connection with the New Year's morning hit-and-run. A KCPD spokesperson says Leday does not face any additional charges in Kansas City.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Leday boarded a Kansas City bound bus out of Tucson the day after the deadly hit-and-run.

Leday's girlfriend, Jessica Terrel, later left Tucson to meet Leday in Kansas City on January 13, U.S. Marshals say. Kansas City police arrested Terrel for fleeing and failure to obey lawful orders.

Leday is awaiting extradition back to Tucson.

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Maribel Gonzalez visits her mom in the hospital every day.

"It's just hard to see her like that but I know she's OK," she said.

Valerie Calonge was celebrating the New Year with her boyfriend Patrick Balbastro, when Patrick saw Cindy Burnett in trouble.

He stopped to help and Tucson Police says 29-year-old Michael Leday ran over all three people. Balbastro and Burnett did not survive. Calonge is in the hospital in stable, but critical condition.

"She's getting better," said Valerie's niece Naomi Rios. "She's getting stronger everyday I should say."

Valerie's friends and family held a horseshoe tournament Sunday in Safford, Ariz. to raise money for her medical expenses.

Basha's donated the food and almost 20 different businesses donated gift certificates to raffle off.

"It feels good to have people support my mom," said Gonzalez.

Rios says Valerie has a long road to recovery.

"We're just waiting on all her stuff to heal," she said. "We just go day by day until she gets stronger."

And that strength, Rios says, will get her through.

"She's very strong willed," said Rios. "I think that's what's helping her get through all of this and all her family is by her side too."

And by her side is where Valerie's daughter plans to stay.

"I love her," said Gonzalez. "And I'm just happy that she's alive.
