Loki the dog needs surgery and veterinary care

$6297raised of $8000 goal
78%

Organizer: Crystal Grace Beneficiary: Dr. Peacock

Loki has endured more than any dog should.....he's made it so far after his surgeries, and needs a break from his suffering. He's battled a MRSP ( MRSA type infection ), and recently Pseudomonas.

This fundraiser is closed

Loki is an American Staffordshire Terrier that is 7 years old. He has meniscus tears along with ruptured cranial cruciate ligaments in both knees. He has associated arthritis in both rear and front limbs worsened by compensating for his weakened hind legs. Due to his size, and the extent of the injuries to both knees, regular lateral suture repair was not advised. It has been recommended that he receive TPLO surgery instead which is very costly. He can no longer walk with out great difficulty, and must be carried up and down the stairs to go to the bathroom outside. The thought of having to put him to sleep because of this is devastating. His will to live is strong, even though his body can no longer sustain it. I sat near Loki's dog bed comforting him as I watched him lay pain. Realizing that it might be his last night with us, not knowing if his scheduled visit at the vet could be his last. The thought of waking up each morning with out him being there didn't seem real. I then thought of how strong he has been all this time, and how he has continued on through the pain because his desire to run, play, and live was stronger. I thought about what a gentle dog he is, and how he humbly lowers his head allowing the cat to bully him. How he would run to our side if gasping at a scary scene in a movie, or even how he bravely protects us by barking at strangers at the door. I thought about how our pets are a reflection of ourselves, and they become part of who we are. I kissed Loki on the head and told him that his job is no longer to be the look-out, that I would be his look-out, and thanked him for his love and strength. I remembered an epitaph from a previous pet that was lost which read: Near this Spot are deposited the Remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the virtues of Man without his Vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning flattery if inscribed over human Ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of my dog. Any love and support you could provide for Loki allotting him more time before this epitaph would be so graciously appreciated. TPLO surgery is very costly. Unfortunately, as many of us - I am not in the financial position to be able to afford this kind of care for him. I figured I owe it to Loki to try. We will continue with this fundraiser for it's full course, in attempt to raise enough money to give Loki the care he needs. We don't want to give up on Loki, and will carry him for as long as we possibly can. Thank you so much for helping us give Loki the care he deserves. I know there are many people that have had to give up their pets, or euthanize sick pets due to financial reasons. We would like to avoid this any way we can.

Hello everyone. I just wanted to post an update. Loki's leg seems to be doing about the same. The incision is still a slightly raised and red - and Dr. Peacock responded last week. I am posting  a copy of the email trail below which contains the recent update. Thank you everyone for caring about Loki and everyone who has taken care of him, and helped us save him. I never knew it would take so much even AFTER the surgeries, and never expected the infections which has been very difficult to manage. I pray that this leg heals because we can't manage any more in terms of his care. I can never thank you all enough. Thank you Pat Johnson for your recent generosity. We send you and everyone our love....You are in our hearts always.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly Dr. Peacock, I really appreciate it. I 'll try the Benedryl, and keep an eye on it.
Worries me a little only because they thought the same thing last time about the internal sutures when I took him too Golf Rose Animal Hospital for the last infection  ( they said it was likely irritation from the suture knot at the end. ) Hopefully, that is truly the case this time around.....and this will be the last you hear from me.
Thank you for everything.....have a good rest of the week, and a nice weekend.

I understand your concern given the last surgery.  I would try benedryl to see if they respond first.  You can give up to 100mg twice daily.  If they persist or worsen lets schedule  another recheck exam.  They may also be related to the sutures under the skin that are absorbing.  A lot of times as the suture dissolves it will cause an inflammatory reaction in dogs with sensitive immune systems.  Most of the time if we give it time, the suture will dissolve and the reaction will subside.  I would not panic yet but let's keep an eye on it and send me more pictures if things change.

Subject: Loki - bumps

Hi Dr. Peacock,
Sorry to bother you......
I don't know if you noticed when Loki came in for his x-rays yesterday, but he has two little bumps on his incision line. I didn't think to mention it, because when I checked them last they weren't as red and were barely noticeable. I hoped/assumed that they were just irritation or allergies. However, today I looked at the bump/s again and they are noticeably larger. When Loki had his surgery on the other leg, he had a similar bump about a month after surgery. I took him to his primary vet - and they said it was nothing. It started out small like the one he has now, and grew progressively larger. About a week after I took the photos, I took him back to the surgeon who did the surgery. She opened the incision & took a culture of the bump, and that is when they found out he had MRSP infection. I'm worried because the bump on this leg is looking very similar to the bump he had before. It is red, slightly raised, and also shiny. I took a few pictures just now - my camera is not very good, and it's bad lighting. Hopefully, you can get an idea. I also included the pictures of the bump from the first surgery 8.30.12 -which is the first attached folder.
My only concern is that the other doctors sent me home the first time I brought him in with the same looking bump, and later it turned out to be MRSP. Would the x-rays have indicated any soft tissue infection? I don't believe anything showed up on the x-rays the first time this happened either. I'd have to ask Dr. King at the Specialty Center in Middleton, WI. I just remember they had to open his leg up, take the culture, and then they flushed it out, and treated him for MRSP.
I'm so happy glad the bone is healing well, but the bone was healing well on his other leg too when the same thing happened -so now I'm worrying again about these bumps.... they are looking very similar as the last time.
Thanks again for everything Dr Peacock. I really appreciate how kind you've been, all you've done to help us, and Loki.
Sincerely,
Crystal Grace

LOKI UPDATE: Hello everyone...... Loki had x-rays at the vet yesterday, and Dr. Peacock said the bone is healing very nicely, and Loki is doing well! He said no reason to return, that all is well. I was happy beyond words that this was all over, and was looking forward to posting some new happy pics of Loki soon online. Today, I noticed he has two little red, shiny & raised bumps along his incision line. They look similar to the bumps that popped up last time when he developed the MRSI infection about a month after surgery on his left leg. I'm having horrible anxiety right now, and very worried for poor Loki. My camera is not very good, and takes bad pictures at night.....but I took a couple photo's of the bumps, and emailed Dr. Peacock. They look very similar to the ones I took when this happened last time. :( PLEASE PRAY for Loki that he is healing, strong, and will be ok!!! I'm so tired of all of this roller coaster and just need Loki to be alright. Hopefully, it's nothing & just allergies or something.... Love and thanks to all. Dear god/universe, please bless Loki and let him continue to heal, and be healthy, and let these bumps go away. ♥

Please pray for Loki.....this is the latest email to Dr. Peacock, Dr. Hillier, and Bella Moss:

Loki had knee surgery on Thursday, the 28th on his right leg. He has not been doing well since - and developed a fever this after noon. I took him to the ER at the Aurora VCA where the surgery was preformed. I was advised that the fever was most likely due to inflammation, but it was suggested a full blood panel be done to rule out a systemic infection. A culture was taken of the inside of Loki's leg prior to closing the incision at time of surgery. Apparently the culture was not yet available, but from what I understand they were able to obtain the preliminary culture results. According to the accessment, preliminary aerobic and anaerobic culture results do show evidence of a resistant Pseudomonas bacterial infection which is only susceptible to Marbofloxacin ( Zeniquin ) . I was instructed to give Loki (1) 200mg tablet a day until further directed. He is also still taking the Doxycycline dosage of 400mg 2x a day recommended by Dr. Hillier.

I am worried on what the next steps will be. I have never seen Loki show pain before. After the first TPLO surgery on his left leg, there was very little bruising and hardly any noticeable swelling. He was full weight bearing on the leg the same day we brought him home. He was not in pain, nor did he cry, and he ate just fine. It was only after a month or so after did we notice a small abscess forming & shortly after discovered it was MRSI. He never had a fever or suffered in such pain. I'm very sad and don't understand why after taking all of the preventative measures this time, that it could be even worse than before in all aspects. I gave Loki baths with medicated shampoo for two weeks prior, and treated him with the Doxy as advised.

I would like to know if Loki will need to have the incision reopened, cultured again and flushed. I am worried about the prognosis, and need to prepare financially. The antibiotic that I was given alone is $400 for a month supply - and I don't know if it is long term like the last infection.
We are barely getting by right now. I am mentioning all of this because I am so worried on how we are going to help Loki. We love Loki so much it breaks my heart to see him suffer, and worries me that I am not be able to follow through with his care. I want to do everything we can to save him. I have used the last available amount on my credit card ($466 )this evening for his ER visit, and then the remaining $160 balance was taken out of my bank account which was meant to cover our rent that I mailed out on the 1st. I don't care, and will do whatever it takes to save Loki, and gather funds, even if it means not paying our rent..... but I need to have a clear idea on what or what can not be done so that I can get started. Please, I know I am asking a lot for help & guidance. It is my job to do right by Loki, and It's a promise I made to him, and myself. Please help me keep it.

If there is anything anyone can do to share Loki's fundraiser, we would be so grateful. I have posted his link below which includes his story.

Hello everyone..... Just wanted to say thank you again and again from the bottom of our hearts for everything you have done to save Loki. His left leg seems to be healing well, and clear of any MRSI . We haven't been able to confirm this with any x-rays, but have faith it is healed & will remain that way. .
Loki is going in this Thursday, the 28th for surgery on the other leg!
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers that he heals quickly & that everything goes smoothly this time around! More updates to come after the 28th.

LOVE, and MANY MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE....ALWAYS.

P.s

PAT & SCOTT, thank you for your recent donation. We are so extremely grateful to you & to everyone. Normally, I would reach out on the comments area, but since the site changed -it won't allow comments to be posted when logged in. Once again, thank you both for your generosity & kindness. Pat, I do hope things look up for you and your husband as well.

Love and thank you always, <3

Is has been 1 month since Loki has been off of the antibiotics, and it appears that all is well and the left leg has healed ( fingers crossed it remains that way. ) . He is scheduled for surgery for Feb, 28th for leg #2 - to give us more time to gather funds, as well as build his immune system now that he is taking thyroid medication ( it was discovered he has a low thyroid as well ) . We will still need to have an additional x-rays taken on the left leg before his other surgery..... to ensure the plate is in the clear.
Love & thanks to everyone for following up on Loki. Youcaring changed their website, and it appears that some of the labs, photo's, and part of Loki's story was lost during their transition. His site will be active for 18 more days, but we are working on an extension.

Love & thanks.....

On Sunday, Sept 16th - we recieved a call from Dr. Tristan Daughtery of the Middleton Vetinary Speacilty Center, who was one of the on-staff after hours doctors. He called to advise that the lab culture results that was taken of the bacteria in Loki's leg had come in ( of which are now uploaded on this site as images ) . Unfortunatley, Loki's leg is infected with MRSI (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus intermedius ) . He advised that Loki's anti-biotics be switched that same evening to Doxycycline 100mg 2 tabs 2x a day. The prescription was called in to Golf Rose Animal Hospital, and was started immediately. The doctor breifly explained about what MRSI is - and advised to research MRSA for further details. After researching on-line, I came accross a foundation called The Bella Moss Foundation (http://www.thebellamossfoundation.com) which is a non-for-profit that assists people with pets that have antibiotic reisitant infections. They have a network of doctors that are experienced in working with these things, and offer peer guidance to vetinarians working with these cases. Bella Moss reached out to Dr. King on 20th with the below email ( and then see below Bella Moss Signature/email for the continuation of this update):

I am president of The Bella Moss Foundation which is a charity helping people whose pets have resistant infections.
We support the public who get in touch with us, but we do not give out medial advise, I have told  Crystal Grace that I will get in touch with you concerning her dog, to offer you contact with our veterinary advisors. There is no charge as we are a charity.
We provide CPD for vets and nurses on infection control, and offer support to people whose pets have resistant infections.
Our board of clinical advisors are available for veterinarians to make contact with, to offer up to date research and peer reviews, as well as advise on clinical management of cases. These vets are experts in the field of antimicrobial resistance, and if you were to initiate contact with them they will respond to you directly.
They do not converse with pet owners, only with veterinarians. Therefore, may I request you take this opportunity to benefit from their wealth of experience, and up to date knowledge of resistant infections in companion animals?
In the meantime I will continue to support Crystal  who is obviously concerned about her dog’s health.
BMF has seen many animals recover well from MRSA/MRSP, but we do not give medical advice to the public, as in most cases, it is the underlying illness that causes the problem and the infection can  differ in each case.  May I suggest that you contact our veterinary expert in North America Dr Scott Weese, who can be very helpful in these cases.
Sadly, we are not in a position to offer financial help, but  only education and support
I thank you for your time

Subject: X-rays, skin, and teeth
Hello Dr. King -
I am being overwhelmed with information on this MRSA since speaking with Dr. Daughery on Sunday - as you could probably sense my concern by my follow up with The Bella Moss Foundation.  I know his skin issue needs to be addressed (possible pyoderma? )  At what point will Loki's skin need to be looked at ? I scheduled his follow up appointment for Oct, 15th ( 8:30am) for his xrays to check on the infection. I know that if he is on antibiotics, it won't do much good to do a skin culture at this time. I am going to have his skin looked at by his primary vet ( we get a discount through Midwest Rescue ). When should I make an appointment for his skin to be checked out ( how soon after he is off the Doxycycline) ? Also, before this happened  - I made an appointment at his primary to have his teeth cleaned on Oct, 17th. Is this something I should cancel? Could he contract a staph infection in his mouth as well? If so, would it be wise to do the teeth cleaning now while he is still on the Doxycycline? Last, how will we know if the infection will return if the x-rays look good on the 15th? Do we just wait for external symptoms again, or do we come in for more x-rays to monitor it? I'm guessing that when we come in on the 15th that they x-rays may show it's cleared, but that it may return afterwards. I'm confused on how to proceed.....

To be clear.  Loki does NOT have MRSA , he has MRSI (Staphylococcus intermedius).    And while resistant bacteria are a problem, the one he has is susceptible to two good antibiotics that are relatively inexpensive.  (I have heard of some that are only susceptible to an antibiotic that costs $800 per week).

If he is a carrier of this organism, then there would be no point in culturing him while he is being treated.

The repeated radiographs are to track trends in the bone.  We absolutely can have patients that have radiographic improvement and a focus of infection rears its head later, so serial radiographs might be needed.

Unless he is having a problem with his teeth, I would put off routine cleanings until his knees are done.   He should likely always received antibiotics before a dental as long as he has plate/screws in place

Hello Dr. King,

Won't his skin issue need to be addressed this time around before we could consider doing his second leg - in order to reduce the chance of  the same thing happening to his right leg? That's why I ask at what point would we do the culture of his skin ( ie: How long after the antibiotics are finished would we need to wait before addressing the skin? )

Also, If the x-rays reflect indicate improvement that the infection is cleared , what will be the next step with regard to his second leg? Will we wait to see if the infection resurfaces? Or address the skin, and move forward? When you say serial radiographs, how frequently are we talking?
Loki has never had his teeth cleaned before, and his gums are significantly inflamed and look painful. Would it be a good idea to have it done now while he is still on the Doxycycline? What are the potential risks involved with doing it before his knees are done?
Thank you,
Crystal Grace

Dr. King did not reply to this email until I sent her yet another follow up on October 1st - at which point she FINALLY decided to contact Dr. Hillier who was reffered by Bella Moss. ( After seeing I am not letting up here is my guess... ) The below email was sent almost two weeks after Bella Moss made contact, and advised she contact their vets who specialize in these infections...

I don't think there is much point in culturing his skin because carriers can shed intermittently and we don't know where the source is on his body. (ie we could miss it easily) , but he does have skin problems, likely stemming from allergies and I do think you should find a dermatologist in your area to manage his skin long term.

Because he is doing well on the other side, I am not in a hurry to move forward on the other side.
We should radiograph the bone every 4 weeks to see how things are changing.  Antibiotics should be continued for 6-8 weeks after things look normal (on skin and radiographically).  For the second surgery, we will pre-treat him with a course of antibiotics for 10days before surgery and you will be giving him whole body baths every 2 days for 2 weeks with chlorhexidine soap.

Dr. Hillier and I connected by phone this morning.  His only management suggestion that is different would be to increase the doxycycline dose to 10mg/kg which would essentially double the dosage. (he usually chooses the higher dose empirically, this is not something special for Loki).
_________________________________________________________________
I then sent her the below reply ....being concerned that we are doubling the dose which is a MAJOR change. The email didn't specify if I should begin this now or anything specific. I also wonder why she didn't treat him with antibiotics before & after his first surgery? As she is clearly aware that he has "allergies". When we first had the consultation with her before surgery I told her that the vet at Banfiled ( Dr. Kimmy) wouldn't operate on him unless his skin was cultured and treated first. I gave her this information, and she shook her head and frowned saying " I'm not concerend. He most likely has chronic allergies". I trusted her as a boarded surgeon. Anyhow, here is her reply below ( she wrote in blue inbetween my questions) :

Thank you for your reply, and for touching base with Dr. Hillier.

1. How do we know that his skin condition symptoms are allergies vs. pyoderma (with his associated symptoms being: Papules,, crusts, Epidermal collarettes, Patchy alopecia, moth-eaten excessive shedding, greasy skin & yeasty odor ) ?
You need a dermatologist

2. Why would we treat him with antibiotics prior to surgery this time if his skin condition is stemming from allergies vs bacterial infection?
(A.) Also, would we not treat with antibiotics after surgery as well?
Because he is likely a carrier   allergies and skin infections often go together

3. Wouldn't the underlying cause of the bacterial infection need to be identified  as well (Ie weakened immune system from ectoparasites, systemic disease/thyroid issue, etc ) ?
(A). Would it be wise to address this prior to moving forward with the second surgery?
Not from my end  - this is also why you need a dermatologist

4. For how long will the monthly re-check radiographs continue before we can move forward with surgery on the other side?
It will depend on what it looks like

5. He is currently taking 2 tabs 100mg Doxycycline 2x a day - Wouldn't 10mg be a decrease in dosage and wouldn't 10kg = 10,000 grams be too much? (I'm obviously confused )
(A.) How much should I increase the dosage - and should this begin now or after his follow up on the 15th?
10mg/kg would be 400mg 2x daily (which is the other end of the normal dose range for this medication) - no reason to not make the change now
Thank you again,
Crystal Grace

So, she writes " allergies and infections often go hand-in-hand" . Well then why did we not treat this issue before the first sugery is my question. I did not ask this, because I wanted to get as much information as I could without offending her - but I did incinuate this by the way I worded things in my questions....see my response below:

1. Would it make sense to seek a dermatologist at your hospital that can work closely with you for his next surgery (Or does it not matter )?

(A.) Should I have him seen for this now, or wait until he is done with months of anti-biotic treatment? ( Since you mentioned he will most likely be continuing for another 6-8 weeks after the 15th - and culturing won't do much good now because of this) - I'm guessing regardless of skin culturing results while on antibiotics - they can still test for endocrine disease now & treat him for it while he is taking antibiotics, so that he can be in better shape for surgery # 2?        ( since we now know he has MRSI definitive from infection results & obvious allergies/infection from day one prior to surgery) .

(B.) Does it have to be a dermatologist - or do you think my primary can culture the skin, and test for endocrine disease? I get a discount through Midwest Rescue at my local place. I did call, and they are not specialist, but the receptionist said they can indeed schedule an appointment ( whatever that means). What would a specialist be able to do for his particular issue that my primary could not do ( besides charge me more money ) ?

I'm trying to organize this in a way that makes sense logistically & financially. Most importantly, in a way that will serve Loki & get him better.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your advice & help.

I would find a dermatologist in your area because it is a life long relationship and I would get started now.

While many primary care veterinarians are very good at common skin diseases, few likely have experience dealing with MRSI.  I think a dermatologist is money well spent.
_________________________________________________________________
This all leaves me wondering why Dr. King didn't suggest Loki see a dermatologist to begin with, so we could have possibly avoided his leg getting infected and treated the underlying issue before hand ( possible systemic issue or thyriod ) , treated the pyoderma/allergies/skin infection with antibiotics before, during, and after the sugery to decrease the likelyhood of infection. I truly think Dr. King was looking to just do the sugery, and didn't realize how thorough we would be in following up if anything went wrong. She probabley figured that worse case scenario, the hospital would make more money treating a chronic infection and possibley having another surgery to remove the plates. Either that, or she just simply didn't care either way. I believe these doctors aren't idiots, and the Banfield vet clearly knew ( he wasn't even a boadeded surgeon - and only did Lateral Suture repair - not TPLO- which is why I went to Dr. King for a second opnion ) ....but he clearly knew. I called him ( Dr. Kimmy ) after the-fact asking more questions and he said " as soon as I open him up , I am going to spread whatever bacteria is on his skin inside of his leg, and your hole surgery is going to go south". He also said " It is very important to do a skin culture, treat him with antibiotics before and after the surgery to prevent the chance of infection". So I wonder why doctor King would not take the same precautions? Isn't that why these vets become "boarded"? Why did I bother seeking a boarded surgeon if the non-boarded one knew better? These are questions I'm asking myself....

Now we are left to start from scratch, as I am no longer confident in Dr. King. Loki will require atleast 3 full months of antibiotics ( about $50-75 a month if we are to double the dose which I haven't done yet ) , monthly x-rays ( which are around $200 a month ) , a consult and office visit with a new doctor (we have made an appointment with Dr. Peacock who was reffered by a friend... (http://www.vcaspecialtyvets.com/aurora/departments-doctors/doctors/john-peacock-dvm/10306 ) , appointments with a dematologist, as well as internal medicine to check the underlying cause of the infection ( thyroid? ) . So...here is more info on MRSI & pyoderma:
http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=94402

In the mean time, I have emailed Dr. Hillier who consulted Dr. King regarding doubling the dose of Loki's antibiotics. This is the email I sent Dr. Hillier who has yet to respond - and I don't know if he will.:

Dr. King seemed very indifferent about me doubling the dose for Loki's meds. She mentioned it very casually as if it was your experimental dosing suggestion, and didn't specifically suggest when or even if I should make this change right away. When I asked if I should begin doubling the dose now, she said " no reason not to start now". I'm very concerned....doubling the dose is a HUGE difference here to just casually leave it up to me to make the decision to change. I'm worried that Dr. King doesn't care to be bothered with this issue with Loki, and that she is not familiar with how to treat him. I've been giving him 2 tabs of 100mg Doxycycline 2x a day for several weeks now. He was on two difference antibiotics prior. Could suddenly increasing the dose cause any harm or resistance issues in the future? Why does he need such a high amount all of a sudden? I'm very confused, and not feeling confident in Dr. King. I waited two weeks for her to respond to your email- which she only did after I continued to bother her with questions in regard to Loki's care. I appreciate you stepping in, but I'm feeling very uncertain with what to do. I'm just looking for some honest & direct advice . I still also don't understand why greater precautions were not made by Dr. King when doing the surgery - as she indicated herself that "allergies and infections go hand-in-hand". She was very aware of his skin condition. I'm not looking to place blame, but at least would like to be given some good direction, and honest feedback, and some compassion. I have to keep digging, and digging and unraveling in order to get anywhere it seems.

Thank you,
Crystal Grace

CONCLUSION OF UPDATE:

It is going to be an expensive process to clean up this mess, regroup, and get on course with clearing Loki's current MRSI infection, and everything else mentioned. The funds we have raised are being used for all that has been mentioned. Invoices will be uploaded, and can be emailed upon request as well. We will need to carry out this fundraiser to raise enough money to save Loki, and then get his second leg done. More info to come....Thank you all for being here with us, for your love & help, and for continuing to share Loki's Link on the mission to save his life. We hope it can be done....we believe it will.

Loki had his follow up appointment with Dr. King in WI on Sept,12th to check on two bumps that developed on his incision after receiving surgery on the left leg. She did the 6 week follow up x-rays, which did indicate an infection vs. just a suture reaction. They had to sedate him, open up the incision, take a culture of the bacteria, and then flush out the knee. He will continue with the Cefpodoxime ( antibiotic that was prescribed by local vet here when the bumps were discovered on 09/01 ) for another week until the culture results come back. Once they do, they will decide if he should remain on this antibiotic for another 3 weeks, or switch to a new anti-biotic. He will then need to go back for a check up at 2 weeks ( at local Primary vet again) to check on how his incision is healing. In one month, he will need to return to Dr. King in WI for more x-rays & to determine if the infection has cleared up yet. Once it has, we will be able to discuss when to begin surgery for his second leg. I'll be uploading his follow up appointment paperwork to his website with the details on the above. Please so kindly continue to pass along his link, so we can keep up with the follow up appointments & additional surgery, treatments, and hopefully only one more surgery to come (on his right leg). Loki was so happy to finally start to begin life with with less pain. We feel saddened that he now has to go through all of this just as he was starting to experience being more comfortable & happy. We hope when he heals, we will be ready with enough funds to continue on as planned with making him whole again, and saving his life. LOVE AND MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL , ALWAYS....

The orginal appointment on the 12th was moved to the 19th because  Dr. King doe not do surgery on the 12th. We were hoping to have the left leg checked and then leave him for surgery  for the right- in order to save a trip. However, On Sept, 1st Loki developed a bump on his incision site. We went over to Golf Rose Animal Clinic because it turned a little purple and swelled a bit. The kind vet there took a look and said that it was likely just a reaction to the internal suture knot, and she gave him antibiotics. A couple of days later, he developed a 2nd bump right above it. So, we called back and kept the appointment for the 12th ( this Wed ) to have his left leg looked because of what has happened. They will likely have to lance the incision area, and remove the internal sutures. We will then have to bring him back to have surgery on the right leg on the 19th. Please keep positive thoughts that it will be a simple fix, and we can proceed as planned with his right leg on the 19th!  Love and many thanks to everyone always!!!!

Loki has his 6 week follow up on Sept 12th with Dr. Dayna King. They will do re-check x-rays to see how well the bone is healing on his left leg. He needs to be strong enough and healing on the left leg before they will do the right.  In the mean time,  it was recommended that he be started on underwater treadmill therapy right away. We haven't decided what to do in terms of the physical therapy yet. We didn't want to dip into the fundraiser funds for the physical therapy - and then not be able to afford his 2nd leg when the left is healed enough. So the fundraiser is now updated to reflect the physical therapy he requires. We're hoping he can start the physical therapy soon. This will allow his left leg to get strong and heal, and then he can get his right leg done shortly after his 6wk check up & x-rays. That's where we are at right now....
As always, love and many many thanks to everyone!

Loki is now home and resting from his first surgery on his left leg. Last night was very difficult...he was a little wobbly and had diarrhea as soon as we got home. We fed him a little beef with water because he didn't want any dog food or regular water.Today, he is resting and a bit whinny. He now seems a little constipated, and tried to go potty a few times but couldn't. He still has to be carried up and down the stairs to go to the bathroom outside, so we're trying to get him out as much as we possibly can to give him a chance to go. I've called and left a message for the doctor asking if we should cut back on any of his medications. I'll be posting regular updates as he improves. Fingers crossed, please keep positive thoughts going for Loki.
On the drive home last night, there was construction on Hwy 12 from WI. It took about 3 1/2 hours to get home, so during the drive I had a lot of time to sit and think about how lucky, and grateful we are for everyone that has donated or reached out to help Loki in some way. It was a full moon, and the sky was really beautiful and lit up. I gently closed my eyes, still seeing the light/reflection of the moon, and tried to go through the list of names and people I know, and everyone who has helped in any way large or small. Tears were brought to my eyes as I sat and reflected on everything that has brought us to this point. I was overwhelmed with gratitude that we were actually driving home with Loki, and he was indeed on his way to a second chance at life. When all of this first happened, I said a prayer before bed begging to please help me find a way to save Loki. I was so sad and just sobbing at the thought of having to put Loki to sleep. A miracle has happened, because so many people have reached out to help us save Loki's life. It's almost unbelievable....and truly is amazing. We are so close to being able to get Loki's second leg fixed as well, and I have faith it will happen soon. Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart. I can't say it enough, and I can't ever describe completely the immense amount of gratitude that I feel everyday for every person here.

UPDATE from last night 07/31. Loki has had his first leg done and is recovering from surgery as we speak. He broke out in hives from the surgical solution, but was given Benadryl and also Rimadyl for the inflammation. He handled the anesthesia well, and is now resting, and being medicated for the pain. He will be watched overnight by the ER doctors, and hopefully will be well enough to go home tomorrow ( Wed), if not Thursday. Dr.Dayna King will let me know by tomorrow when exactly he can go home. Please pray that he heals well, and has a speedy recovery for leg #1. I will post some photos and more updates as soon as he's back. Thank you all for your love & support - and for getting him this close to being able to walk again! Only one leg to go!

Love and deepest appreciation.....

I love this poem......I dedicate it to everyone.

A Poem Of Gratitude

By Chuck Danes

I share my debt of gratitude with all my spiritual friends
Whether Christians, Muslims, Jews, and such or even Buddhist zens
Regardless of the place we live or where your faiths begun
My gratitude begins with this, "I've learned that we are One"

I'm grateful for the many days when clarity is strong
As well as those it "seems" that life has somehow led me wrong
For it's those times that awaken me and nudge me toward the light
Till once again my hopes and dreams are clearly held in sight

I'm grateful for the love within the circles that I dwell
My family, friends and even those who've made life seem like hell
For each of those have taught me more regarding how to Love
Provide me feelings to express these things that I write of

I am grateful for the right to dream, to hope, to wish, and know
That all my thoughts are merely seeds which based on Love must grow
That if I'll think them consciously and nurture them with care
These visions held, my hearts desires, will soon be waiting there

I'm grateful for the fact I've learned that we consciously create
That to mold and shape a life desired I must keep my thinking straight
That when the fear that shows it's head which is based on false belief
I have free will to change the thoughts to those that bring relief

I'm grateful too for false beliefs which led me on my quest
For mentors met along the way I truly do feel blessed
Who clearly showed me of the need to understand my worth
And "Higher Truth" which promises a life divine on earth

I'm grateful for the fear I feel at times because I know
That when it's felt it's purging power exists to help me grow
The awareness of it's presence shows there's something more to learn
That my focus must stay fixed on Love to attract these things I yearn

I'm grateful for the joy I feel, I'm grateful for the fear
Understanding what it is and that it draws me near
To the life I know is waiting on the other side
And when it comes I must hold fast and use it as a guide

My gratitude goes deeper still, for breath, for sight, for life
For teachers who have shown me that my "thoughts" create my strife
I'm grateful for the plan which says whatever you receive
Is drawn to you through feelings felt, created by belief

I'm grateful for all nature, the birds the grass, the trees
The lakes which hold abundant life, a summer evenings breeze
The clouds above the ground below, the moon, the stars, the sun
The days and nights which represent that another day is done

I'm grateful for the time to spend to deeply go within
To tap into the Source of Truth that's sure to help me win
For it is there that truth comes known regardless what is taught
In man made circles of the world that form restrictive thought

I'm grateful for all wisdom gained as I journey through this life
Like words expressed in anger hurt, and only lead to strife
That truth will stand the test of time, that Love will show the way
That thoughts and feelings of the past are what create today

I'm grateful too for all my friends who are reading this today
For the bonds that we have formed since your paths have crossed my way
And for the future and all it brings for all we have to share
The giving of ourselves to show the world how much we care

I've learned to stay in gratitude no matter how things seem
That perceptions held as negatives will only slow your dream
So even though my path will lead through troubled spots I know
I must keep on, keep focus fixed, on life's abundant flow

There's so much that I'm grateful for, though sometimes I'll forget
Beliefs rekindled from the past that I perceive as threats
But it's these times I must remind myself of what I know
That when they show their presence, that they're here to help me grow

One final thought I'll share today before I say I'm through
I'm so grateful for these words to give today to all of you
It is my wish that they will help you keep the attitude
Which leads to that which you desire and comes through gratitude

UPDATE! Sorry this has taken me so long everyone! I saw Dr. Peacock on Oct, 16th. He was very nice, and willing to take his time explaining things. He did say that he would not have done anything differently than Dr. King ( in terms of his skin before the operation ) . It seems as though a lot of vets aren't very well versed in MRSP/MRSI/ or MRSA infections when it comes to the bacteria residing on the skin. Dr. Hillier ( with Bella Moss Foundation ) advised Loki be on double
the antibiotic amount originally prescribed- Dr. Peacock believes that will be overkill. I'm a little confused by all the varying opinions.....BUT, I do have faith that Dr. Peacock will be willing to listen, explain, and show compassion as he has already demonstrated this in one short visit. To conclude, I will be touching base with Dr. Peacock this week and asking him to reach out to Dr. Hillier to clarify variant suggestions in treatment - and hopefully they can reach some mutual understanding and Dr. Peacock can then explain this to me. Dr. Hillier will not discuss treatment suggestions with anyone other than a vet. After they connect, I'll know more about when Loki's next surgery will be scheduled. GOOD NEWS is that Dr. Peacock said that Loki's infection is not visible at all! The x-rays look great, and he is 95% healed on the left leg. He said that Dr. King did an EXCELLENT job on the surgery - and the implant is positioned well. He also said that Loki's blood work doesn't indicate any immune issues or disease ( in terms of what might have caused the weakened immune system making him susceptible to the MRSP bacteria colonizing on his skin - which then entered the surgical site) - so the only thing we'd need to check on is his thyroid. Will be scheduling an appointment at Golf Rose for thyroid check next. Your prayers are working everyone! Love and thanks ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Always......Please keep Loki in your thoughts that he continues to heal, get strong, and will be on to the next surgery for the right leg in a couple months...or less.

On Sunday, Sept 16th - we received a call from Dr. Tristan Daughtery of the Middleton Veterinary Specialty Center, who was one of the on-staff after hours doctors. He called to advise that the lab culture results that was taken of the bacteria in Loki's leg had come in ( of which are now uploaded on this site as images ) . Unfortunately, Loki's leg is infected with MRSI (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus intermedius ) . He advised that Loki's antibiotics be switched that same evening to Doxycycline 100mg 2 tabs 2x a day. The prescription was called in to Golf Rose Animal Hospital, and was started immediately. The doctor briefly explained about what MRSI is - and advised to research MRSA for further details. After researching on-line, I came across a foundation called The Bella Moss Foundation (http://www.thebellamossfoundation.com) which is a non-for-profit that assists people with pets that have antibiotic resistant infections. They have a network of doctors that are experienced in working with these things, and offer peer guidance to veterinarians working with these cases. Bella Moss reached out to Dr. King on 20th with the below email

We've decided on a surgeon! Dr. Dayna King at Veterinary Specialty Center in Middleton, Wi is the most reasonable in price as well as the most qualified (and is board certified).

Here is the link:
http://veterinaryemergencyservice.com/about-us/dana-king

Loki has his appointment this Wednesday - July, 11th at 2:30pm. We will have the written bill at that time, and will update this site.

Here is more information on the surgery as well ( as provided by the Specialty Center) :

Thank you!! Fingers crossed that Loki gets his surgery!!

Naperville doctor is not a board certified surgeon - so we are back to the search. Prices do not vary much from place to place in Illinois for a board certified surgeon. We have contacted another office, and are now waiting to hear back from Dr. Avril 's office in Northbrook to see if they will take over this donation account as beneficiary. Their prices for TPLO surgery are pretty straight forward, and include all fees ( $3,600 PER LEG).

The vet school in Madison is not any cheaper than the local surgeons for TPLO surgery ( they quoted $3,600 + per leg ). We have another consult in Naperville tomorrow - which is slightly cheaper ( $3,200 - $3,400 PER LEG ) They sound very nice and willing to work with us, so we can make them the beneficiary to this donation site. Thank you everyone so much for your kindness. As soon as we have the written quote it will be uploaded, and all donations will go directly to Loki's selected surgeon.

by Crystal Grace

We are working to get the estimate faxed from The University Of Wisconsin School Of Veterinary Medicine. One received, we will be posting that to this site - as well as asking the school if they will accept the donations directly. If approved by the school, the beneficiary will be changed to the hospital performing the care for Loki.Thank you for the suggestion, Trish !

We are dog owners and major dog lovers and have invested a lot into our dogs to do what it takes to keep them healthy. We recently lost our loving dog, Thelma, at almost 15 years old. Near the end of her life she had trouble walking due to a growing mass on one of her hind legs, and we had to carry her up and down the stairs and outside to go to the bathroom. So your cause is near and dear to our hearts. In her case due to the nature & location of her mass and her age, surgery was not a viable option, but if it was we would have done it. We hope you can get what you need with a little help from a lot of people. It looks like you're well on the way to doing that. Good luck with the surgery and with Loki! We are rooting for you.

My pittie just had her first ACL go this last December, which we had repaired, and then second one went in late June. Thankfully we recovered enough financially in between to pay for both, but I know how heartbreaking this can be. I can't imagine having both out at the same time. Good luck to Loki and you all as well in making this happen.

I'm happy to donate what I can but if this poor dog doesn't get help soon, it's just nit fair to make him keep going on in this condition. Sometimes the biggest gesture if love is letting our pets go with dignity and grace. I hope Loki gets his surgery, but if not, his family needs to help him find his peace. Just doesn't seem right, or humane, to keep a poor animal alive and in agony for so long.

Janice
I pray for Lokis recovery. I know how you feel. My pit bull Scooter is 3 years old and last Nov. we faced the same problem. He also had a TPLO surgery and will still need his other leg done. We live in Arizona and it cost us $3900 for each leg. I am still trying to pay off the first knee so I can get the other one done but when faced with the decision to put him down or fix him. I had to fix him. He isn't a dog he is family. My 4 legged sons name is Scooter.

Crystal Grace
Hi Janice, Thank you for sharing on the site about your dog Scooter. I know many people are struggling with different situations. I don't like to get into the sad, sorry details of my own but I'll summarize a few details as asking for help should require an explanation. I lost my job, had to cancel my own health insurance. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2008 - which varying symptoms has made it difficult to work at times. I haven't been able to afford to get medical care for my own health issues, and conventional medicine has always failed me. Keeping healthy, eat well, exercising, and remaining low stress has been the only thing that has helped thus far, and is within our means. We have faced a few other major hurdles that I won't mention unless you'd like to send me a personal email message to:lokisurgeryinfo@yahoo.com - I can touch on that further. In regards to cost for all of this - Loki also will require physical therapy which is going to be about an additional $600 per leg, and is not yet listed on this site. We sadly can't afford any of this in our current situation, and do not have the option to finance these amounts either. Loki is like family to us as well, which is why we are doing everything within our means to keep him alive, and get him the care he deserves. I have spent nearly a thousand already from my unemployment funds on consultations, presurgical x-rays, and exams - not to mention skin biopsy's for lumps, treating skin issues, and vaccines all necessary before surgery. The cost of this alone ( not included in this fundraiser or estimate ) has been extremely hard to manage at this point in our lives. The ligaments in Loki's legs are completely gone - according to the Doctor, so he needs the surgery right away - otherwise we too would postpone surgery until we could afford the 2nd leg . That could be a very long time from now. We live in a 2nd floor apartment that has outside metal stairs in order to get outside ( which are very slippery in winter as well). Loki can no longer manage the stairs without falling. Carrying him has been extremely challenging at times, and we want to avoid hurting ourselves or falling down the icy stairs in winter while carrying an 87lb dog. Given that we do not have health insurance, I have to also keep my own safety & well being in mind. Again, we are doing everything in our power to save Loki and avoid anything bad happening to any of us. I hope this explains a little bit about our dilemma, and reason for starting this site. It's nice to know you care so much about your dog as well, and I pray for Scooter's recovery too. Thank you for reaching out to us, sharing a little about yourself, and relaying your concern for Loki. Everyone single person who contacts me is in my thoughts, and heart always! Sincerely, Crystal Grace P.s Some has asked about Loki's size : (Loki is a very long and tall dog, and his ribs can be seen and felt - he is not classified as overweight, but we will still be working to have him shed a few pounds anyway so it is easier on his legs. )

Crystal Grace
Thank you so much Danny and also Isabella, Markus & Hope. I love all of you. Everyday I thank you all. Everyone here, new and past donors. Thank you always....

Liz Williamson
Hi Crystal, I'm sorry to hear about Loki. My previous dog, Jessie had tplo surgery on both knees as well. I can empathize with the hardship you have to endure. I have many friends that have gone to the Vet hospital in Madison, WI at the University instead of a specialist to save some money on the surgeries. Here is the link in case you have not had a chance to look into it. I hope it might help. http://uwveterinarycare.wisc.edu/services/cats-dogs.html

Crystal Grace
Hi Liz-Thank you for taking the time to suggest the school. I did contact the University Of Wisconsin Veterinary School, because they came recommended by a woman I ran into at the local PetSmart. They were actually more expensive then Dr. King in Middleton,WI. I am actually holding their quote in my hand right now.I had to get the paper to reference their exact quote which was : $3300 - $3900 PER LEG!Dr. King charges only $2,900 per leg. The remaining $250 or so is for follow up xrays at 6wks (Which the Madison school did not include in their quote either - so it would have been even more.) Believe me I called around for weeks, had several phone consultations as well as in person ones. Unless I wanted to fly or travel somewhere very far (which I would have then acquired expensive travel costs) - $2900 per leg plus $200 for follow up x-rays was the best price out there for TPLO.It's about a 2 1/2 drive from Chicago - but even with the cost of gas it's still a savings.I've been researching this for weeks. I am out of work right now, and trust me, I wanted the best possible price. Would you mind me asking how much you paid for TPLO surgery on Jessie and where? If it's less than my quote, and in driving distance please let me know. Thank you so much for taking the time to help us with Loki. Crystal Grace

Dear Anonymous Donor, Thank you so very much for your donation, as well as your gentle words of wisdom. Please note, that this fundraiser has currently been in circulation for only 2 weeks. Loki's pain is being managed through pain medication and anti-inflammatory prescriptions. He is well loved, well fed, and being assisted in every aspect such as walking & going outside. He is alert, and a strong willed dog. It is not yet his time to go - at least without a fight. I have had other animals throughout my life that have had cancer, and it was obvious when it was their time to go. Loki is not sick, he only suffers injuries to his knees which are very repairable if we can raise enough money for the surgery. So far, because of the love and support of kind people such as yourself - we have already raised $1,455.00 in just two weeks! In my opinion, that is amazing. We owe it to Loki to continue, as this campaign has been blessed with great momentum. We have many good people on our side that are doing their best to help, and we will also be attending the Windy City Pet Expo (www.windycitypetexpo.com) this coming Saturday. Shorty & Hecules from Animal Planets TV Show "Pit Boss" will be there, amongst animal lovers from all over. It is a great opportunity for us to get the ball rolling even faster by handing out fliers we've prepared specifically for this fundraiser. If Loki was a human child, no parent would simply put him down because of bad knees. Even if in complete financial despair, they would still do everything within their power to save their family member. That is our exact position right now. Thank you again for taking the time to provide such care, love, and concern for Loki. We appreciate your help, and taking the time to make sure we are doing the right thing. With kind regards and gratitude... Crystal Grace

Hello Pat J in Chicago - Thank you for your donation! We are so grateful for you and everyone that has helped us!!In regard to Loki's care. Please refer to my reply to Julies comment about the vet in Rockford. Julie is referring to a different type of surgery for her dog. We have called many vets all over Illinois, and Wisconsin and have obtained several estimates before deciding on Dr. Dayna King. This is the absolute lowest we could find for this specific surgery ( TPLO ); which is why we are traveling to Wisconsin to have the surgery done. Julie was referring to Lateral Sutures which is less expensive but was not recommended for Loki.

Crystal Grace
Hi Julie - TPLO surgery is more costly than regular Lateral Sutures for acl. Due to the extent & severity of the damage to both of Loki's knees, and his size ( 90lbs ) - the doctors/specialists that we have seen did not recommend lateral sutures (which is the surgery you most likely obtained for your baby). We have obtained several estimates, and this was by far the least expensive for this specific type of surgery. In Illinois, the price range is anywhere from $3,400 to $4,000 PER LEG. So the quote we obtained from Dr. King in Middleton, WI is very reasonable. I've attached her link ( under "My Links" )- and there is information on the site regarding the different procedures.Lateral sutures is a very good surgery as well - but again depends on the dog. Please let me know if you have any other questions! We really appreciate you taking the time reach out to us.

Just to clarify, the $6051.00 includes both of Loki's legs

Julie
Our Pitt also had this done on one of her knees. I did a lot of research, just wondering why this is so high. We had a wonderful experienced vet at a cost of 1500 a knee all inclusive. Tests etc. I'll be donating, but please keep in mind if you don't reach your goal there are other great vets. Ours was in Rockford, home the same day. A friend of ours had her boxer done the same day. Happy to give you info if needed.

Julie
Just realized this is TPLO and not just acl surgery, which my dog had and did wonderful with. 60 lbs.
