Joscelyn Dempsey is a precious little girl with a big fight ahead of her. Joscelyn was born with hemimegalencephaly: a rare disorder in which one side of her brain is larger than the other and malformed. This condition is causing her to suffer from epileptic seizures that do not respond to medication. If left untreated, these seizures will spread to the healthy side of her brain and she will end up disabled. In order to stop the seizures, Joscelyn will undergo a hemispherectomy in early July 2012 and have half of her brain removed. With adequate therapy and stimulation, the remaining healthy half of her brain is expected to take over the functions and responsibilities of the missing half but this process will take many years and will require a large investment of time and money. Post-surgery, Joscelyn will be paralyzed on the right side of her body. Some of the therapies she will need in order to learn to walk, talk and learn to use her affected right side again will be physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, music therapy, aqua therapy, and hippo therapy. Some of these therapies may not be fully covered by insurance and cost over $100 per hour. In addition, we will need to purchase books and toys to stimulate Joscelyn's cognitive development so that she may eventually catch up with her peers in school. As of this time, there is no way to estimate how much her continuing therapies will cost.
