Update from Erin regarding Haven's surgery to remove those nasty cancer tumors!
I am sitting in the PICU at Rocky Mountain. Haven has come out of surgery and we are recovering. We got here around 8 am and got platelets and then headed into surgery at 1130am. They blocked off 3.5 hours for the surgery and it ended up taking 6. Aaron and I are extremely drained emotionally. Half way through, our oncologist came out to tell us that the tumor had calcified around her arteries so it was slow and steady work for our surgeon to get at it. When the surgeon finally came out, she was as happy as us that it was over. She said that when she opened Haven up, everything was so stuck together with cancer tissue around such delicate structures, she just took her time and tried to get as much as she could in a safe manner. She said she was pleased with the outcome based on how tough the situation was and Haven currently has two working kidneys. AMEN. As you can see from the photo she has quite the scar. She is currently in a lot of pain, so the staff in the PICU is trying to manage it the best. She cannot eat or drink and she just wants water. She also wants to stand up and that can't happen either based on her tummy. She has a naso-gastric tube to help her stomach after being moved around and she is so mad about it. All in all, tough as nails and holding her own. We are hoping to be moved out of the PICU tomorrow and on to the regular peds floor. The tissue that was taken out is being sent down to pathology and we will learn if it is non-viable tissue. We are hoping that it is all dead!!! We want to see no living neuroblastoma cells!! As we move forward, Ill will update. We will be here for the next few days. I am here tonight and Aaron will relieve me tomorrow morn so I can get to my first day of work!
Thank you for all the loving, kind messages. You are all amazing and we couldnt do this without your support. Keep up the prayers for fast healing!! Love.
