It has been an arduous 18 months since I began my journey back from the dead. The unwavering support of my family and friends has been humbling to say the least, and from where I stand now I can clearly see our efforts have not been in vain, but this is not to say that the year ahead will be any less trying than the last.

I am re-upping this fundraiser in hopes of buying a mechanical walker that I can use to stand and walk at home, and make better use of my days that I can't make it to the gym.

Aloha friends, family, and supporters!

Graham left O'ahu on Tuesday, March 19th for Miami, Florida. The flights on commercial airliners were smooth and there were no major issues. Graham is set up at his mother and stepfather's beautiful home and will be continuing his physical therapy there at a Spinal Rehabilitation Center. He also will be continuing on with acupuncture, massage and hyperbaric chamber treatments. His recovery plan also includes help from his martial arts trainer for the next couple of months. Graham is the doing the hard work he needs to do now and we know he is up for the task at hand. We are so proud of his progress so far and know he will keep amazing us all!!

Thank you so much for your continued support and well wishes.

From Graham himself. Posted to his facebook page this past Saturday, 3/2/2013:

"Hello life long loves and allied acquaintances, here is a new status for you to comment on. Words won't do to describe how greatful I am to have such an amazing group of people at my back during the greatest struggle of my life. Your offerings of money have put me miles closer to affording the care and treatment I need, and more importantly the love and support each of you sends feels less like a collection of letters and more like one big life raft. As some may know, my fingers and toes wiggle on my right side, and my upper body is slowly getting stronger. This is all good news, but the best news of all Is that as I wiggle my way out of this wheelchair, I have the motivation of one day walking up to each of you awesome kindred spirits and hugging the shit out of you. Literally. Lets heal together, and never once take ourselves for granted."

Graham moved his right thumb and index finger! Graham says he looks at his fingers and tells them to move sometimes and in the past, nothing happened. Today he did it and they actually moved! He was still moving them when we left! Today was a free day, no formal PT although he and Lawrence went to the PT room and did some anyway. We are so happy with this new improvement and can't wait to see what he does next! An awesome display!

We got approval from Kaiser for five weeks at the Rehab of the Pacific instead of the two they originally approved so we are thankful for that. Graham has been doing very well in his PT and OT. He works very hard at whatever they have him do and is usually exhausted by 4 pm when PT and OT end. They also are educating us all on various subjects related to Graham's SCI. There's a lot to learn. Graham has been powering around in the power chair during the day once they get him out of bed. He steers with his right arm on a joystick like device. The chair also allows him to tilt himself back to relieve pressure on his bed sore.  There is a team/ family meeting on Tuesday to discuss Graham's progress and future options. Today Graham had a Lomilomi massage. There is an approved acupuncturist who comes to the rehab hospital on Tuesday and Thursdays who we are looking into and Graham's acupuncturist and friend, Angel is also helping us to find one as well. All in all a couple of good days moving forward.

feb. 14- Graham was out of bed in a wheelchair for about 6 hours yesterday and then was in the power chair for about an hour. His Occupational Therapy(OT) was practicing eating with a fork strapped to his wrist guard with a plate that has a back edge on it. They wrapped the fork up so he wouldn't poke an eye out and used play dough as the fake food. He also brushed his own teeth with a similar set up on his wrist guard. After a big day of OT and a couple of sessions of PT he slept heartily from 4 until 6 pm until dinner. He also met another patient around his age who has a similar injury and they spoke for a bit. We got Graham some rehab clothes- short sleeve button up shirts and loose shorts. His mom got him tennis shoes. He'll be styling out of the hospital garb he's been living in. We are supposed to have a team meeting soon to come up with Plan A and Plan B. Plan A is going to Miami. Plan B is yet to be determined. His stepbrother is on island as is Jordyn today. Happy Valentines Day to all of his supporters!

Aloha all! The good news is that Graham moved to the rehab hospital yesterday and got all settled in. He has a big room, the whole floor was recently remodeled and his room has a city view on the third floor. The address is Rehab Hospital of the Pacific, 226 N. Kuakini St., Honolulu, HI 96817-2498. They basically just checked him out and worked out some food menus for him. He starts his first PT today! The bad news is that Kaiser turned down our first referral to the mainland rehab in FL so we are submitting an expedited appeal this week. It sounds like this is Kaiser's usual MO so we will see what happens with the appeal. We're not giving up. Mahalo again for all of your support!

Graham has been okayed to finally leave Kaiser hospital today at noon. Claire will ride in the ambulance with him and Tom, Lawrence, Summer and myself will follow in the car. Graham is sooo ready for this change as are we. We still don't have approval to move him on to the mainland to FL for rehab but are hopeful as other Kaiser patients have been approved in the past so at least there is precedent. Also still waiting on fundraiser totals. We are so thankful for all of your support!

Graham had another good night with lots of rest and a productive RT session. He's feeling better and is breathing better. The Maui Open Studio went well yesterday with lots of T-shirts sales. A couple of Tom's pieces sold as well. We've heard the fundraisers at Bev's restaurants went great too and we should know tomorrow what the totals $ were. The Maui Open Studio goes today from 10 am - 6 pm at Fort Faught, @ 200 kaluanui road, Makawao 96768. Janet Davis, Tim Garcia, Clay Simpson and Alan Puhfal all have Art in the studio too. There is also a great Paniolo painting by Jan Kasprzycki and a gorgeous wooden bowl by Greg Davidge up for auction. Tom and I had a day of self care yesterday and actually got in the ocean after a nice long walk. We feel so supported by everyone who has taken the time to donate, buy a shirt, say a kind word or just think good thoughts about Graham's recovery. Our family truly appreciates you all.

Mahalo to everyone who has donated! Graham's fever has gone down to 99.1 and he's on antibiotics to help with the infection. He will probably transfer to the Oahu rehab on Monday now as they want to make sure he doesn't have a lung infection before they move him. He's had some decent days and is just trying to stay patient because he really wants to start rehab.  On another note- Bev Gannon has generously offered to match any donations made for Graham at all three of her restaurants on Maui tomorrow, Feb. 9  - dollar for dollar. You can always just stop in for a drink and can donate from there. The restaurants are Haliimaile General Store upcountry, Joe's Bar and Grill at the Wailea tennis courts, and Gannon's in Wailea at the old Sea Watch. Thank you!

Graham ended up with an infection last night so his transfer to Rehab of e Pacific is on hold temporarily. The physiatrist told Graham he could pick any of the model spinal cord injury(sci) program he wanted and she would approve it. He chose the University of Miami since it will be close to his mom's home, many supporters and energy healers he likes. The Dr. says she is submitting the request to the bean counters so we are waiting for their approval now. The idea would be to get him "travel ready" at the Oahu rehab and then fly him to Miami with Commercial Nurses who not only care for him and the like enroute but tackle all of the transfers from facility to airport and such.  Please circle him with light and love! Mahalo!

Graham needs to be off iv pain meds for at least 24 hours before he can be transferred to the rehab hospital. This means Weds. is the earliest he can go. We were busy today learning acupressure points for his lungs, spinal cord, his feeling of stagnation and for emotions. Angel Masi even made videos(with Summer and Lawrence's help) of each of the 4 sets so we can each follow along when we give him acupressure treatments from here on out. It really seems to help him relax and sleep. It was quite interesting to learn and I suspect we all will use some of the pressure points on ourselves. Graham visualizes light during the treatment as do we- swirling up and around his spine and out of every vertebrae front and back from his head to his toes. The other focus today for me today was working through the Kaiser maze to find out who, what, where, when and how to get a referral from the appropriate doc for rehab outside of Hawaii. Turns out it's the Physiatrist. If we can get Dr. Cheng's approval, Kaiser will pay. She's been helpful so far so let's hope she can figure out a way to get Graham the most aggressive treatment available! Mahalo to every single person who is thinking of Graham!

Good afternoon G-team compadres,
He did well last night without the ventilator. He is still having some lung secretions but they seem to be getting less and less. The current pain management scheme didn't work at all last night and he didn't sleep so we're hoping the adjustments made today will help him. His pain according to him went from 4 to 7 or 8 out of 10 yesterday while they tried a different combination of meds. Hopefully they will get the right doses in the right combinations very soon. He's been in decent spirits despite the pain management issues. We're getting closer to having the G-team t- shirts printed and available for sale. Keep sending light, love and courage. We can all feel it!

Graham continues to improve everyday. He passed his swallow test and can now eat regular food, even with the tracheotomy. He also was off the ventilator for short periods of time yesterday as part of the process to wean him off of it. Once that's done, he can move to the rehab hospital. He hasn't had any movevent in his feet or legs but his arms continue to get stronger. We are so thankful for your thoughts, prayers and support.

Graham has been moved from icu to a regular hospital room. He passed a swallow test and is now cleared for a regular diet. He is still on the ventilator and the goal is to wean him from it slowly. Once he is off of it, he will head to the rehab hospital of the Pacific. He gets a little stronger, day-by-day. We so appreciate your support of this recovery fund. Every little bit helps! Mahalo!

I want to start with a huge mahalo to all who have donated to Graham's recovery fund. The outpouring of support financially and otherwise still is really just overwhelming. You all lift us up everyday with your kind words, thoughts and prayers. Graham has a great mental attitude and is so courageous and brave. He is an inspiration to us and we know that he will exceed all expectations in his recovery! Today we had a consult with the surgeon who will perform the tracheostomy tomorrow at 1:30pm. He said Graham is looking good and he doesn't expect any complications. The speech therapist said that she has never seen anyone so alert while intubated and she also believes that he will do amazing things in his recovery and will surprise us all. She will work with him post surgery to strengthen his throat muscles so he can start trying to eat and talk, even with the trach.  His lungs remain clear today and I expect we'll finish season 3 of Downton Abbey on the computer.
With much love and aloha!
The G-Team
