Dear friends,
We started this fundraiser in October 2013, immediately after Flora was diagnosed with ALS or "Lou Gherig's Disease" at the age of only 37. ALS is a chronic neurodegenerative disease with no known cure or effective medical treatment, and the average survival from onset to death is 3 to 5 years. Since Flora's diagnosis almost 6 years ago, expenses for her care continue to increase as the disease progresses. Needless to say, we still need help.
Initially upon being diagnosed, Flora vowed to remain optimistic. We researched doctors and organizations with the hope of stalling the onset of symptoms, but unfortunately, the illness showed no signs of slowing down. Flora was once an enthusiastic snowboarder and runner – now, her arms and legs have no function whatsoever and she's unable to speak. But it's the latest developments which have us most concerned, as she now struggles to swallow and breathe.
Obviously, Flora cannot be employed due to this illness, and frustratingly, she was also denied long-term medical coverage. We created this site in an effort to raise funds for her mounting medical costs and allow her the highest quality of life despite this terrible disease. Costs include 24/7 live-in aides, continued therapy at home (in an effort to slow the atrophy of her muscles), transportation services, and expensive technology and equipment, such as a special bed and wheelchair.
Those of us who know her best know Flora has a strong and passionate spirit, was full of energy and loves to laugh. She's a selfless person, always putting her own needs second and caring more about the needs of others in her life.
Whatever anyone is able to give is greatly appreciated. No amount is too small! Please continue to check this site for updates, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
