On Monday, Dec. 9, 12 year old Damon came home from school after vomiting. He was exhausted and took a nap. After waking he vomited again and became unresponsive shortly after. He was rushed via ambulance to the nearest hospital in Green Bay, WI. After doing a CT scan they found a tumor on his brain stem.  Upon this finding he was flown via helicopter to the Wisconsin Children's Hospital in Milwaukee and has been in the ICU ever since.

The next day we were under the impression (based on vitals and tumor location) that there was nothing that could be done to help Damon and that it was only a matter of time before we would lose him. That was an unfathomably hard day.

The Wednesday CT scan was much more promising and his vitals had improved. Surgery was now at least an option. Damon's mom (Nissa) and step-dad (Rich) spent their first wedding anniversary (12/12) nervously sitting in an OR waiting room for most of the day while waiting for any kind of results. He made it through the surgery which is remarkable on its own.  80% of glioma tumor patients do not survive this procedure.  Not all of the tumor was removed because of the close proximity to his brain stem.  We knew that going into surgery, but surgeons removed as much as possible without injuring the stem.

A week later Damon remains in a coma and his mom and Rich have been unable to work, as they live in Green Bay; 2 hours from the hospital.  Adding to their stress is the concern that they cannot pay their mortgage or bills and will lose their home.  If Damon recovers, it will still be a very lengthy process, as he will still require radiation and drug treatment to further shrink and eliminate the remaining tumor.  There is great risk that he will be forever disabled in some capacity, as well.

We would all be so very grateful for monetary generosity so that they might keep their heads above water and their focus on the recovery of this amazing child.  You can follow his progress on his Caring Bridge page: go to Caring Bridge

** Update:
It is with the greatest sorrow that I report the passing of our dear Damon.  On December 20 Damon had brain scans to determine function and damage.  It was found that his brain had suffered considerable damage.  He would never recover and be able to undergo treatments to further shrink the remaining tumor on his brain stem.

On December 23 life support was removed and Damon was able to pass peacefully in his mother's arms.  On December 28 a massive gathering of friends and family assembled to say goodbye to our wonderful guy.  Many attendees donned our best superhero shirts and apparel to honor our favorite little real-life superhero.  The service was an emotional celebration of a wonderful life cut far too short.

2 days (not even), >100 donors and over halfway to the $10k goal.  We're all positively dumbfounded by all of the love and support being shared.  Thank you all SO very very much!

In <24 hours 50 donors have raised $2,370.  To say we're speechless and in-awe would be a gross understatement.  Thank you, friends.  My sister and our entire family appreciate it more than we can possibly express.
