At the core of our mission is a drive to combat veteran suicide pharmaceutical drug abuse. We believe in the healing power of camaraderie. Contact the Organizer
Not only will Battle Van be a professional around-town transportation service for severely disabled veterans of war, but also a vehicle for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder to heal themselves by helping others.
Our vision is to build a network of veterans who volunteer as drivers of wheelchair accessible vans, thus not only providing a much needed service, but also facilitating the positive peer social interactions which have been proven to be powerful tools in healing post-traumatic stress disorder.
We believe that no disabled veteran should ever ride a bus in a wheelchair, feel stuck at home or frustrated by simple transportation logistics.
There is no other organization of our kind anywhere in America. Disabled soldiers have shockingly limited options when it comes to assisted transportation, none of which are either veteran-run or provide transportation for simple errands as opposed to urgent hospital trips.
According to a study published by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 22 veterans commit suicide every single day.
More then half of these veteran suicides are committed by recently returned soldiers under the age of 35.
The majority of whom were also using prescribed pharmaceutical anti-depressants.
This means that since 2001, America has lost more than ten times as many soldiers to suicide at home than to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.
We find this shockingly unacceptable.
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a real problem that needs to be dealt with and we can't help but wonder if pharmaceutical drugs are more part of the problem then the solution..
We truly believe that camaraderie, sharing, bonding and social support are far more effective in healing post traumatic stress disorder than pharmaceutical drugs and will be a natural side effect of putting veterans together in a van with a common goal - get Joe to the grocery store and back!
Founder Ian Barr is a 25 year old veteran of Afghanistan. He served as a 37F - Psychological Operations Specialist - in the army reserve from 2005-2011 and was deployed with Special Forces in 2007 where he earned an Army Commendation Medal for "sustained acts of heroism" and a Combat Action Badge for his actions in more than 35 direct fire engagements with enemy fighters.
While drilling in the reserve and since separating, Ian worked as a professional fundraiser for major nonprofits such as Greenpeace and Children International in New York City, Twin Cities Public Television in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ian is also now a certified Reiki practitioner.
The Battle Van A-Team includes Ian's best friends Eric Itow, Andrew Miller and Kyle Berg, all of whom are also military veterans.
Eric is an army national guard aircraft pilot who served in Afghanistan. Andrew is an army national guard truck mechanic who served in Iraq and Kyle is an army national guard tank driver.
We are crowdfunding seed money.
With start-up capital, we can begin to fund our mission at no expense to our passengers with these three revenue streams alone:
-Direct Donations- With startup capital we can incorporate and acquire 501c3 nonprofit status, thus becoming able to fund-raise tax-deductible donations from private supporters.
-Amazon Associates Program- With startup capital our website can become an affiliate Amazon.com, thus earning us a commission from Amazon.com purchases made by our supporters.
-First Data ISO & agent programs- With startup capital Battle Van can become an ISO or agents of First Data, thus earning us a residual commission from the processing fees of supportive businesses.
Battle Van is a simple solution to two big problems and truly scalable on a national level.
However, we need a financial kick start from people who believe in our cause.
If you believe in natural healing of PTSD, in providing volunteer transportation to disabled veterans or if you just value an inspiring startup,
